Charlaine Harris Finishes Sookie 12 Titled, Deadlocked

Charlaine Harris posted on her blog earlier this week announcing she has (finally) finished Sookie book 12 titled, Deadlocked!  Remember, we broke the news about her title choice first when we posted our questions she answered at Polaris 25, which you can find here!

On her blog she wrote;

I didn’t have a chance to read a lot this past week, because I was working hard to finish DEADLOCKED, Sookie 12. I’m always experimenting with different ways to organize my work so I can keep track of what’s going on during the course of the action in the book. This time, I think I made real progress.

The day I send a book to my editor (and my agent, and my continuity maven, and to Dana and Toni) is just about better than Christmas. Of course, the minute it’s gone, I think of five things I should have done differently, but I’ll have chances to make changes. All of those people will have suggestions, and I’ll have days of slogging through the manuscript again trying to decide which changes to adopt and which ones to let fall by the wayside. I’ll have plot holes to fill, factual errors to correct, and clumsy sentences to rewrite. And I know all this when I hit “send.” But there’s always the delightful feeling of accomplishment, the happiness of having done my best.

For a couple of weeks I can maintain the illusion that this time I haven’t made any mistakes: that I haven’t miscounted and had the action take place on Sunday (when Merlotte’s is closed) or put Sookie’s birthday on the wrong day, or made any of the million errors possible when a series has gone on for so many years with such a large cast. (I have no idea how George R.R. Martin is doing it.)

She also posted on her Facebook page…

“What a relief to send DEADLOCKED into my editor(s). Now I can rest easy for a little while, until I get the revisions back. A writer’s dream — to have your editor tell you there’s not a single change necessary . . .”

She also shared some spoilers as to what to expect in Deadlocked!

Warning: If you don’t want to know, please don’t read any further!

This is what she said in an earlier blog post;

While I know where I want to be at the end of each book, I don’t always know how I’m getting there. Sometimes I surprise myself. Last night, Sookie got kidnapped, and I’m going to see how that shakes out. A character I thought was dead is probably alive, and I’m real happy for him. Then again, if the work doesn’t go so well today, he may be dead again. This is the fun (and the panic) of being a writer. Every day brings decisions, and I have the power of life and death and procreation over all these people I’ve invented.

You can read both blog entries at charlaineharris.com!

Who do you think she’s bringing back from the dead? Notice, she mentioned a ‘he’? So, we know it’s not Claudine or either one of the Pelt sisters.

  1. My money is on Fintan.

    • same here

  2. Charlaine Could be bringing back Fintan or Claude or Naill.
Or even Earl Stackhouse. Maybe Rene????? Maybe Steve Newlin?
Or Russell Egdington. Or Livius Appisus Ocella????

    • Claude and Niall are still alive, as is Russell Edgington,in the books.

      • amazing how some people get lost between the shows and the books

        • They are still alive in the books so far. There is nothing saying she didn’t kill the guy in the beginning of the book.

          • Laffette should still be alive…….

      • king russell edgington died in the last book dead reckoning

        • I don’t believe Russell has died in the books, from what I remember. You might be thinking of Victor Madden.

      • jenifer you are right they are still alive….people are getting the book and show confused…for one the show is good but does not hold true to the book….I love the books.

  3. I don’t know….I have a feeling it may be vampire she is bringing back (Although I don’t know how….) But it could be Godric….Or maybe she is bringing back Tray Dawson….I always liked him.

    • GODRIC must come back because he’s rather magical

  4. i would love for Tray to come back… Not Appius though. hmmm maybeeeee uuuuhhhhhh Quinn (ohh i sure hope not) idk?

    • awwww…I loved Quinn. I’ve been hoping all his family stuff worked out…and of course for him to survive The Pits.

      • Quinn’s in the novella in The Sookie Stackhouse Companion. It takes place between books 10 and 11.

    • You have to read “The Sookie Stackhouse Companion” to know what happens with Quinn. In that novela, Ms. Harris kinda paired him off with another shifter. As for menacing characters, Steve Newlin was killed by shifters in Club Dead. Russell Edgington was alive and married, Godric met the final death as did Ocella, Claudine, The Phelts, Fintan and Earl. Unlike the tv show, every member of sookie’s family(aside for Claude, Niall, Dermott, Jason and Hunter) are dead. It might be Andre Paul, after all Sookie didn’t see him flake off after being staked by Quinn!!!

      • In Club Dead, Steve Newlin ran away. It was his companion who was killed, by Betty Joe. We never know if Newlin was caught or not, but in the novella that takes place between books 10 & 11, Sarah Newlin plays a part….. And we are lead to believe that her husband is underground somewhere….

    • quinn isnt dead

      • he cant be…that would b wrong i so many ways…

  5. Quinn isn’t dead as far as we know, but I really don’t need to see him again. I doubt it would be any of the vampires that we saw get staked, wouldn’t mind Tray so much, just not sure how that would be possible. It’s probably no one of importance.

    • Quinn did not die…

  6. Godric isn’t in the books. Russell isn’t dead in the books., nor are Claude or Niall or Quinn. I don’t see how Tray could be back, he lost his head. Unfortunately, it could be Appius or Victor. Fintan would be a good choice and interesting. Maybe Breandan or Colman. Gosh – if it wasn’t he, I would say Sophie Anne which would be a shocker. I hope it isn’t Andre.

    • Godric was in the books-and sookie watched him meet the sun in Sookie 2.

      • yup….she watched him at the church

    • Godric is in the book. But they called him Appius. Eric’s maker none the less.

      • That was not Godric, the character they used in the books was named Godfrey. Appius is a completely different character altogether.

    • she said a man

  7. I hope it’s not Victor after we just got rid of him, none of them are a very appealing choice.

  8. How about Eric? I mean, he is a vampire, therefore he is dead…?

    • That’s just stupid. Come on, I think its Andre.

      • Maybe stupid, but we all wish for it.

  9. I dont think it would be a vamp she would bring back although you never do know.. Unless sookie uses her clovial thing to bring someone back.. That would be the only way 2 bring back a vamp in my mind. anyway, as far as humans goes.. maybe her father? Or grandfather? Thatd be interesting.

    • I think if she used her cluviel dor to bring anyone back from the dead, it would be Gran.

  10. OK, ever since the fairy wish box was revealed, that could bring ONE WISH to the beloved of the owner, it’s obvious that if Ms Harris wanted to end the series, all she would have to do, is bring Eric (or more likely Bill)back from the dead, ie vampire state, so he and Sookie could marry and have babies and grow old together. Other than that, i cant think of a guy that died, who COULD come back. Unless zombies or ghosts are the next ‘supernatural creature” brought into the series. S

    • Quite possible. Amelia alludes to ghosts in book 6. Vampires can’t leave a ghost behind, though, so it would have to be someone human, were, fairy, or witch.

      • only problem with this theory is, if Eric were made human, Sookie would hear his thoughts. That was the main reason why she started dating vampires in the first place! So it’s just not a viable option even if it was possible…

        • Right. I don’t think Eric will ever be made human. That wouldn’t make any sense. You are absolutely right about her being able to hear his thoughts if he became human, though she did date Quinn whose thoughts she could hear. She was also interested in Alcide. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there, you make a good point. Also, Eric would be furious if he were made human again. I don’t care how much he loves her, there’s no way he’d give up his nature as a vampire.

          • I have been thinking a lot about whether or not Eric would choose to be human for Sookie…its actually the only choice that makes sense in accordance to the books. Bear with me a little bit first when Eric had amnesia he told Sookie that he would give up everything to be with her…Eric gets his memories back and is astounded at how happy he had been with her…Eric then thinks that he can have his cake and eat her too =) However in the last book Sookie’s main problem with Eric besides the other obvious problems (Queen of Oklahoma, and the simple fact that Eric will never grow old and she will) is that she wants Eric to be more human in his emotions not just in his emotions towards her. She wants Eric to feel emotions for humankind and that is not in his vampire nature. Charlaine has been very good about foreshadowing certain events. Even Eric thought that at some point Sookie would change her mind and want to become a vampire to be with and bound to him forever. I think that Eric once faced with the idea of loosing Sookie forever, he will sacrifice his mortality to be human again to be with Sookie. I have re-read the books several times and their is no-one else that believably Sookie could wind up with. This whole series has been a slow build up to the Sookie/Eric romance and to have her wind up with Sam, Bill, Alcide or Quinn just wouldn’t be believable. No … it has to be either Eric or she chooses herself and the last book will be open-ended with Sookie seeking out a new path for herself. Anyways thats how I hope the story ends.

          • She could hear there thoughts but not clearly because they are shifters. It is only regular old humans she can always hear clearly.

          • Yall made valid reasons for Eric to choose being human over vampire for Sookie. Only problem in, with that amazing fantasy, is that in The Sookie Stackhouse Companion Charlaine answers questions from many of her fans and in one she clearly states that a vampire cannot become human since he or she is already dead and that Sookie will never become a vampire. I think that it could be Fintan. He could have been captured all this time but that doesn’t make much since because of the fact that it’s said Gran tries to get ahold of him when Sookie’s Aunt Linda gets cancer. That was A LOONNGG time ago. But then again time works differently in Faery. Andre Paul could be a good choice because like one of you said Sookie didn’t actually see him get staked. I myself with what I know would like it to be Fintan. He’s always watched over Sookie so he genuinely cares for her and that’d make her have more family.

    • She’s been asked about that, and Ms. Harris has repeatedly said that he vamps are dead, they don’t have kids or come back. Unlike Vamps in Anita Blake books or the Twilight series.

  11. i think its layfatte

    • Lafayette! After all the fan love from the hbo series maybe she will bring him in. Sookie always did like him.

      • I thought this too!

  12. I think it would be great if Sookie would have to be turned vampire because of some trouble she WILL get into and then have to use her one wish on herself, letting someone else die. Or stay dead.

    • I don’t think she’d choose to become a vampire. She loves being out in the sun. She told Eric, in Book 9, never to turn her because she’d “hate that more then anything.” She’s no Bella. I don’t think she can use the cluviel dor on herself. It has to be used on a loved one. I don’t think it’ll turn out the way we would expect. She won’t use it on someone she’s wants to be with. I’ll bet it it’ll be some totally selfless thing. Maybe she’ll use it for Hunter, not to remove his telepathy, but maybe for some other reason. Just a thought

  13. maybe its not someone already dead, maybe she kills someone off in the book just to find out theyre not really dead. if it is someone thats ‘already’ dead then my guess is fintan… ugh i hate having to wait for the new book and season 5. waiting sucks…

  14. Bring Eric back to life so he and Sookie can marry , have children and grow old together with lots of adventures in between that we can cheer them on , hurt with them etc, I just love seeing them together. She being child like, getting in trouble and he being protective and romantic to her. Their humor too is so funny.

    • I completly agree with this. I dont know if it would make much sense, or even be possible. but i too love seeing them together and would definatly read books about their life together!

  15. I think bring eric over would be awesome but that would kind of most likely be the end of the series? Do ya think? Someone she probably “thought” was dead.. And if “work” doesn’t go well he might be dead again? I don’t know.. Oh the anticipation! Probably someone who is killed off in the beginning of the book when she’s supposedly kidnapped and then comes back in the end.. This truvial dor thing I hope will be played into this book somehow- and I want amelia to move back in!!! I loved having her live with sookie.. Humm.. Guess well have to wait and see!

  16. Wasn’t so fond of Amelia in the last book, which sucked because she used to be one of my favorite characters, hopefully that’ll change. It is technically the end of the series, anyway. Only two books left, so anything could happen.

  17. eric would never let her turn him into a human. he LOVES being a vampire with all his power and vampire-ness. if she did it behind his back he’d be livid lol. first person i thought of was Lafayette, just cuz everyone likes him in the show. i don’t think it could be a vamp since they flake away to nothing when they die, i think they would notice if one of the vamps they killed hadn’t met his true death. fintan would be cool to see. there was poor jake purifoy, the were-turned-vamp, he wasn’t a bad guy necessarily, and i don’t think he was staked or anything, they found him on the floor of the hotel before the bombs went off. he coulda survived. charlaine says she is “happy for him” so he’s gotta be a decent dude, right? or maybe not since she says “if the work doesn’t go so well today, he may be dead again.” maybe whoever it is they thought he was dead, but he got turned into a vamp instead? who knows! i hate waiting a year for these books! lol

    • I have thought about the possibility of Sookie using the Cluviel Dor to turn him human. I agree. He would hate that. He’s such a powerful vampire. I can’t see him doing that for a woman, even if it is Sookie. I do think he’s going to have to make a choice between Sookie or his power and vampire interests. Who knows? Maybe he loves her that much by now, but I doubt it. Perhaps he’ll surprise me.

      • Eric doesn’t love power for power’s sake. He just wants enough to allow him to live his own life with relative freedom.
When he had amnesia, he was ready to leave his position to be with Sookie, because that’s what truly makes him happy. And it’s still true for him, but obviously as his full self he realizes that while being in a position of power may have its disadvantages, it’s also necessary to ensure his safety and as a result, Sookie’s. Being with Eric makes her a target, but not being under his protection would be even worse since she’s in danger anyway due to her power and her connection to the fairies.
I guess whatever she does with the cluviel dor will be either as a way to solve this conundrum, or it will have something to do with Hunter…

  18. If she starts following the show, it could be Steve Newlin who comes back. I can’t remember exactly what happened to him in the books. I’m still hoping she’ll stick to her own ideas, I’m worried about her taking after Alan Ball now.

    • I think he’s still alive. We just haven’t seen anymore of him. I think the last we saw of him, he was at Club Dead and he got away while his companion was killed. I’ve read the series 4 times in the last year or so (yes I’m obsessed), so I have a good memory of the events.

  19. Godric is in the books he is not Erics maker in the books! She said someone she thought was dead this could me she totally forgot about them and is now bringing them up again not that they are actually dead and she is bringing them back it could be anyone she has mentioned and just simply disappeared at some point. just a thought!!

  20. It’s not Godric, though, the character in the books is named Godfrey.

  21. not sure who it could be, but doesnt seem likely that it would be someone that was killed and turned to dust in front of sookie…COULD be someone we thought was killed in the hotel bombing tho, that’d be my guess.

  22. Ocella or Victor make the most sense for the way things are, currently. But I don’t know how that would happen since she watched both of them die. Ooh. What if it’s her father? That would be crazy since he’s been gone for so long. But she did find her grandfather in Fairy in the show. It could be Fintan. I’m leaning toward someone whose death we haven’t seen. Such as Fintan. Sookie was told he was dead but who actually witnessed that? She was also told that Dermot was evil, which was inaccurate, so I suppose it’s possible Fintan was entranced somehow, too. IDK. I can’t wait to find out though. May is TOO far away!

  23. Im thinking that it is Fintan posing as Dermott….I mean, Mr. C thought it was SO strange to see Dermott and then Dermott took off. If the fae can take over someones like Fintan did with Earl, could it have been Earl who waskilled by thing 1 and thing 2? The way the storyline went down between Mr. C and Dermott in Dead Reckoning, I’m gonna put my money on Fintan. When it comes to the Cluviel Dor, I think that it will be used to save Hunter or in an on the spot emergency situation. I’m more interested in whose kidnapped Sookie. I’m leaning towards a vamp being behind it. I’d like it if maybe Pam does it to protect her. I just hope it’s not at the hands of the queen that Eric is promised to. I’m still highly suspisious of Claude. He is up to something…I’m sure it has something to with the Cluviel Dor though.

    • Okay. I’m liking the way you think on Fintan coming back. That’s a very complex theory but it actually sounds very possible. I’m sold. Even if it doesn’t happen EXACTLY that way, I now definitely think it will be Fintan who returns.

  24. Just finished Dead Reckoning! Love the whole concept of the Cluviel Dor, although I have the feeling it’s use might be more tragic than good.. I also think Fintan’s not dead, and Claude and Dermott are up to no good… Sookie should have learned her lesson about her fae kin in the fairy war. Did anyone else pick up on the more- than-usual vibes between Sam and Sookie? That’s where I’m placing my bets on this all to end. Do we know how many Sookie books CH will write in total?

    • the books will be 13 in total, so we still have Dead Locked and the final one to go.
personally I think the “vibes” between Sookie and Sam are misdirection by CH, but of course it’s undeniable that at this point he’s the only other option for Sookie. Her final choice will undoubtedly be between what Sam represents and Eric.

      • She wants a supe but she wants her man to be human-esque. Toward the end of Dead Reckoning she really seemed to be struggling with the whole boyfriend being a killer thing. One of her big complaints to Eric, when he asked her to move in with him, was that they were just so different. She wants a supe who thinks and acts like a human. That’s what she’s wanted from the beginning. The only person like that is Sam. I don’t want her to end up with Sam, but I really think it’s going to happen. As for the both them being in relationships, I think both relationships are coming to an end.

        • I don’t care if Sam’s relationship comes to an end, not so fond of his girlfriend, but there will be a lot of disappointed fans if Sookie’s comes to an end. I still think they’ll find a way to be together, I don’t understand all of the build up between them if it wasn’t going to last. We’re already not going to get a happy ending for them on True Blood. I was hoping we would at least get that with the books, or at least somewhat happy, but I’m worried that Alan Ball will rub off on her. It’s already started to happen.

          • It helps that there are only two books left. That way if she does get involved with someone else, whether it be Sam or whoever, at least we won’t have to see it for long. Still, I will probably not read anymore books from her.

        • Actually what she REALLY was struggling with in DR is herself, and what she really is. SHE wanted Victor dead, SHE complained to Eric that he wasn’t taking action ,SHE was the one who thought out the plan. She’s not the sweet southern girl she once was, or thought she was. And she’s still struggling between the values she was raised with and the rules of the world she’s now a part of forever.
She just projected all of this onto Eric. And that’s because despite what she says, she and Eric are incredibly alike at their core. I could write an essay about that because it’s such a big part of their relationship…
Anyway, IMO some readers don’t consider the fact that Sookie is not exactly a reliable narrator. Especially in matters of the heart and self reflection, she’s a bit of a “Scarlett” in that she tends to procrastinate examining her feelings, and she can be a bit blind to her own feelings sometimes…
Case in point, the way she still sees herself as so different from Eric, and her wish for a “normal” life. That’s what she THOUGHT she wanted, but things are changing and so is she, and she’s starting to realize it.
As for Sam, there’s not much I can say about him cos he’s such an underdeveloped character….the reader never really gets to know him. Yeah he seems nice and all, but there’s not much else there… still, I’ve always seen him as somewhat of a hypocrite. He claims to be a loner who just wants a quiet life yet he has all kinds of connections in the supe world…hmmmm. And I never liked how subtly dismissive he is of Sookie’s choices…
But the crux of the matter is. She just doesn’t have those deep intense feelings for him she has for Eric. So whatever happens, choosing Sam would be settling. And I’d much rather see her alone than that.

          • Yes. She has BECOME quite a bit like Eric. You are absolutely correct in your assessment when you say she’s struggling with herself, but that’s because she has a problem with who she has become since she’s been interacting with the supes. I don’t think she projected that all onto Eric but I think she doesn’t want to be who she has become. I don’t see her accepting this new self. I see her doing something to change what she doesn’t like about herself.

        • things are not so black and white. Sookie likes a lot of things that have come with her involvement with the supe world. Her life before was boring, empty and without hope for the future. Now she’s no longer seen as a crazy girl, her “disability” makes her important and sought after. She “belongs” now, even if it comes with a price like everything in life.
Yeah she’s changed, and that brings a struggle to reconcile her survivalist mindset with her christian morals. She had a role model in her Gran but her latest discoveries changed her perspective even on that.
But she’s gonna have to accept some changes, and she already has started to. Towards the end of DR she thinks to herself that she there’s no use in trying to get back to what she was because it’s a done deal, and it would mean everything she went through was for nothing.

Also, i believe she and eric have always been very similar in their fundamental traits. It’s just more apparent now because Eric has rediscovered his more “human” feelings and the struggles and vulnerability that come with it, while she in turn has had to develop her more ruthless pragmatic side to survive, like he did for 1000 years. They’re meeting each other halfway, in a sense.

  25. Am I the only one who doesn’t see the vibes between them? They’re just friends, anything else was buried a long time ago. They’ve both moved on and are in relationships now, I don’t get why everyone can see her ending up with him. If that was the case, it would be very boring and disappointing to the readers. And second of all, I just don’t see it. That ship has sailed, if they were going to be together, it would have happened by now. If she doesn’t end up with Eric, I see her finding someone new or at least being alone. I like Sam, but he’s just better as a friend, the chemistry is no longer there in my opinion. Honestly, though, I won’t be happy with anyone else, but I will admit to taking anyone over her going back to Bill.

  26. Yes the fans want her with Eric, but if it’s written well, it’ll turn out great. I don’t think CH should do anything just to make the fans happy. I have enough faith in her craft to believe she will give us a great ending.

  27. See, I disagree. The best relationships are based on good friendships, and they both just think each other’s mates are SO NOT good for their “friend”. It may not be as exciting, but for Sookie, it’ll be exactly what she needs. It’s quite obvious she is not willing to move forward with Eric. 2 books is not enough for her to come to peace with that. I loved them together too, but he’s just so….manipulative. I also don’t think that CH has been influenced by Alan Ball at all; they are both genius in their respective rights. And that’s exactly the reason she won’t bring Layfayette back — I love what the show has done with him, but CH won’t sell out like that.

  28. I honestly never understood why Sam is thought of as such a good friend…. yeah he’s a nice boss who’s generous with days off, but what else is there really?
They don’t really have much in common as people. She and Eric “get” each other, they share a sense of humour, a love of life and adventure, a survivalist nature. They even both have a history of sexual abuse (sookie by her uncle and then the Bill incident, Eric by his maker).
I don’t see this deep connection between her and Sam. Mostly we’re just TOLD they’re friends, but never actually SHOWN any great depth in their relationship….

What you say about her not coming to peace with her issues with Eric in 2 books is actually an argument against a Sam ending. Her relationship with Eric has been slowly and carefully built up for 11 books, and it’s still far from ending. They have a lot to work through and their lifes are so intertwined now that breaking them up completely would take a lot of time. Even more if you count the time it would take to get over him completely AND fully embrace another relationship AND settle into it. I mean, it took her many books just to get completely over Bill!
I just don’t see the time in only two books, from a storytelling perspective, to resolve all of this stuff with Eric and the main plot and AT THE SAME TIME create a believable romance with Sam which doesn’t feel as a settling for “second best”.
It’s not feasible IMO, and it also would’t fit with the trajectory of Sookie’s journey
    throughout the series.

    • He shares his secret with her. He cares for her. He accepts her for who she is. He worries for her constantly. He’s there for her when she has to wait until dark to find out if Bill is alive (DUD). He tries to keep her busy and her mind occupied. He goes with her to help her get her brother back from Hot Shot (DTTW). He borrows a bouncer/bartender from Eric for the purpose of protecting her (DAAD-yes, I know, that was Eric’s motive, too). There’s also that makeout session that’s interrupted by Bill. He fights in the Were War to protect her (FDTW). She defends him (quite passionately) against Errol Clayton, the newspaper reporter (DITF) He confronts Claude and Dermott about their intentions (DR). I know I’m leaving out a lot, but the point is they have much more than a work relationship. He is a very good friend to her.

      • Eric saved her from Long Shadow (DUD) and she wasn’t his. In Book 2, he covered her w/his body to save her. In book 3, she let him glamor her. She looked into his eyes and let him take her away from the pain of having that stake removed. In Book 4 when the witches spelled him, the spell was sending him to his one true love. Where was Eric going? To see his lover. In Book 5, he was doing all that he could to get to her before ‘Patches’ the vampire was going to kill her. In book 6, he was there to make sure Bill told her the truth about why he was there. He was there when Sandra Pelt had those Weres kidnap Sookie. In Rhodes, he saved her from Andre. He could have taken advantage but he didn’t. He was there when she picked up the soda can bomb. He has always been there. In book 7, he was there when the takeover was going to happen. He could’ve buried himself underground but he didn’t. He went to her. She saved him from Siebert when he was going to rape and kill Eric. In Book 8, Eric tricked her into marrying him but it was for protection. He told her that she could end it when she wanted. She never told him that she wanted to. The best part was that he came home to her. He told her things that he’d never spoken of. He shared with her. She wanted that more than anything. She never gets that from Sam. She never knew about Sam’s family until his mom was shot. Anyway, Eric did all that he could to get to her before the faeries could kill her. Victor stopped him. He had been punished with silver and weakened but he gave her his blood so that SHE could heal and so that SHE could be strong enough to move. When he looked at her wounds, he didn’t care. She was scared and ashamed of her body. Do you remember what he said? HE said that her body didn’t matter. He said that she was still whole. She was still a person. She had her personality; her soul. He said that she
was intact. In book 10 he brought her into his world. Eric told her things that she needed to know. Vampire laws are supposed to be secret. He told her in order to keep her protected. She asks Sam questions about how he finds things out, just like Claude and Dermot, he won’t tell her. Eric protected Sookie from his maker when he appeared at their bedroom window. She was going to kill Eric’s maker just to set him free; not caring about the consequences. In each and every book, Eric has been the constant in her life. Not Jason, Sam, Bill, or Quinn. It has always been Eric. She has always said that she wanted someone who would drop everything for her. She has that in Eric only she doesn’t see it. She’s too stupid to see it. From book 1 to book 11, Eric has always been there and if he couldn’t, he always made a way for her. Sam calls her stupid. He uses her just like the rest of the people in Bon Temps and the supe world. Since she and Eric started their relationship in book 4, he didn’t have her use her gift once. That’s not
what he wants from her. So, your theory on Sam being the
        one is so flawed.

  29. I understand what you’re saying, and yes, I do agree to a certain extent about Eric/Sookie being intertwined, and she’s always had a level of attraction to him, but I just can’t shake how he coerced her into a relationship (minus the insomnia part, of course). You mentioned before that Sookie procrastinates in examining her feelings, and I agree. In some ways, even though Sookie is in her mid-20′s, her relationships reflect the ideals of a teenager (as in, she was always Crazy Sookie and was inexperienced until Bill). It might be that Sookie has just not fully examined what is in front of her face — a friend that has always been there, and one that has even been brave enough to TELL her what he thinks of Eric. Sam even reflects the Christian/Southern morality that she is conflicted about. I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure — CH is writing a tale from her heart and soul, not just a fan-pleaser. :) Have you read the “FaeFever” series by Karen Marie Moning? It’s great too!

    • I still had hope for Eric and Sookie after DR. Then I got the Sookie Stackhouse Companion. There are secret dialogues between Bill and Eric. One of those secret dialogues, taking place after the events of DR, made me lose all hope in them staying together. I think everyone here should read that book. The dialogues are very short, but the reader is able to see things from Bill’s and Eric’s point of view, rather than just Sookie’s.

  30. For anyone who wants Sookie to get married (or at least long-term committed) a vamp just won’t do it. Imagine trying to maintain a real relationship with someone who will always be unavailable from sun-up to sunset. On the other hand, Sookie is young, so there is no reason for her to make a “final” kind of choice — she could just be living with Eric when the series ends.

As for Sam, I agree that he is all the good things said above; that said, I also agree that there’s not enough time in two books to bring him more to the forefront and develop his character enough to make Sookie choosing him seem satisfying. My other reservation about Sam is that Sookie has grown so much that I can’t see her spending her life just helping run Merlottes (unless they expanded it into a hotel-resort-casino complex or something of that size). She should become a personnel manager for various vamp enterprises, or something that will let her travel around and keep interested.

My preference would be not to have any definitive “and they got married and lived happily ever after” type ending, but to leave it open-ended, with Sookie having loose links to Eric and maybe others, but facing an exciting new career.

    • I agree neither a relationship with Eric nor Bill could be long term Sookie is already closing in on 30. However her being around her faery kin is making her feel and look younger so maybe that will be a factor that she could maintain a longer lasting relationship with a vampire. However Sookie definately needs to think about a new career…does Sam even have somekind of retirement plan for his workers??? Besides I would like to see Eric make good on what he said to Sookie when he had his memory loss and give up everything to be with her to either take a stand against his sire’s wishes or give up Sookie completely and let her live her life with any high handedness.

  31. Her dad?

  32. I agree with the very few of you about using the Cluviel Dor in order to bring Eric back from the dead. This was my first thought after finishing Book 11. To the ones who read the books, you know what I mean when I say I don’t believe Eric will leave her for beauty and I don’t think she will let him.

  33. i want her to use the cluviel door to become more fairy and join her family. and it’s clearly fintan

  34. I have no idea who she brings back from the dead. The only one that would make a big splash at this point would be Fintan.

I think it is plausable that Pam is behind the kidnapping of Sookie out of love for her maker and wanting him to be happy. Pam knows that he will never be happy alone or with anyone esle since he has discovered his bond with Sookie. I see Pam becoming the teacher in that she reminds him how deep his love Sookie is and what price he is willing pay for her. In turn Pam educates Sookie that she and Eric are two parts of one whole being and nothing will ever change that except death. On the other hand those two pesky fairies Claude and Dermot are obvisouly up to no good. I see them looking to procreate their species (with Sookie) to make their numbers larger on earth so they may be allowed to return to Fairy and I wouldn’t put it past them to kidnap her to do it.

Has anyone even thought that Sookie might sacrafice herself for one of those she loves? Just a thought… Out of such a sacrifice she could become an angel just as Claudine wished. Or Eric sacrafices himself for her and she goes to live in fairy to be with her own kind. She could wish Eric not to be human but herself a vampire as she has already fantasized about at least once. I don’t think it is beyond CH to sacrafice Sookie or Eric for true love.

I can’t wait until she fills us in and no matter what happens I am sure it will be a fantastic ending and who knows if you don’t like it then Alan Ball is going to give you something totally different and interesting as well.

  35. Who else thinks that it was the detective in book 10 and 11, the one who hates Sook so much, that ordered those guys to kidnap Sook in the last book? I also think that, based on the comments above, we might actually get to see Sookie celebrate a birthday. This might be the pivotal moment when Sookie realises that she cannot live forever, and she might just brake up with Eric on her birthday!!! And, check this out; I’m not saying that it’s a possibility, but what if Sookie wished to see what her life would have been if she never meet Bill, or even, if she never had Telepathy. Then we might actually get to see an alternate reality book in the series, I love alternate realties, and there really hard to pull off but I think that if anyone can do it, Charlaine Harris can.

    • You mean Detective Beck? That’s an interesting idea. I’ve been sensing something brewing there as well.

  36. I love it. I really like watching alternate reality episodes in other programmes like Smallville, so I’d love to see an alternate reality episode in true blood, maybe showing Sookie as this big shot lawyer, or even a Fellowship of the Sun Member. God (and Charlaine Harris) only knows what she would have been like if she never got her ability. I also think that it’s perfectly plausible that it was Lattester that ordered those guys on sook, because he never actually knew what she was, he just knew something was wrong with her. And those guys that came to grab her said they didn’t know who she was. Plus, looking at the other suspects, Victor would have been too obvious, and Pam wouldn’t have done it unless she got Eric’s permission.

  37. I hate to say it, but I don’t think Eric and Sookie truly belong together, and that why she could never really bring herself to move in with him, because she known’s that one day his going to leave her. And, I love Eric, I really do, but I honestly don’t think that if Sookie went up to him and asked his permission to turn him human so they could be together, that he would say yes. I think he loves being a vampire way too much, and the power that comes with it. I don’t think he would have the will power to be just another human, because of how much he dislikes them.
In an unrelated note, I think that the next book is going to start with Eric and Pam being on some kind of vampire trial for the death of Victor, and maybe, just maybe, the only way the king can excuse Eric is if Sookie agrees to work for him. Personally, since the beginning I have wanted Sookie to get another job, I just think waitressing is beneath her abilities.

    • Well, she DOES have another job. Freelance Telepath. But the vampires are the only ones who pay for her services. I think she would hate to work for Felipe De Castro, tho.

And as much as I hate to, I have to agree with you about Sook and Eric. It just doesn’t look good for them. I just don’t think he is the one Harris means for her to end up with. However, Eric is my favorite character and I don’t really care what happens as long as he gets a decent ending.

      • Why go through all this trouble with them if they weren’t going to end up together? Anything else is going to feel like a let down.

        • She’s learning a lot from her relationship with him. It forces her to grow and change. He plays a very important role but that doesn’t mean they are going to end up together in the end. And you don’t know if anything else will be a let down. Harris is an excellent strorycrafter. She is perfectly capable of writing a great ending without it being just another fan pleaser. Even if you can’t see another good way to end it, have faith in her at least.

          • Honestly, I don’t love her books in general. They’re better than the show, but I don’t have much hope I’m going to like any ending she comes up with, but I do know I will not be happy if Sookie ends up with someone else. It wouldn’t feel very realistic to me after all this build up with them.

    • People, Eric being human woud be the end of them, not a solution!
The only reason why she started dating vamps is because she can’t be with humans, that’s the premise of the whole thing!

      • True, but she could “wish” the telepathy or the lack of it any way she wanted it to be between them if she wished him live.

        • Only problem Mr. Cataliades clearly states to her in her kitchen that she cannot wish away telepathy. “It’d be like wishing away your spleen”, he says. And all the talk about Eric being human or any of vampire for that matter is ridiculous. CH states in The Sookie Stackhouse Companion that no vampire can become human because they’re already dead and that Sookie will never become a vampire. I’d love her and Eric to end up together in a lovely ending but I don’t see it working out that way unfortunately. But as someone said earlier, True Blood is no much different that if it doesn’t work out in the books the way you’d hoped, you have a good chance that it’ll work out in True Blood.

  38. Okay, then I can understand where you are coming from, bu even if you don’t have faith in her, try to have hope. Maybe she’ll surprise you.

    • I had some hope with season 4, but that left me disappointed. I have a hard time being optimistic about a lot, but as I said, I much prefer the books over the show. I’m hoping that no matter what happens, it’s a decent ending for everyone.

      • Ha! Yeah! I get THAT! I was not happy with season 4, myself. I ranted to my BFF every Sunday night. lol I enjoyed Lafayette’s storyline and the ghosts were fun but King Bill and a pansified Eric did not make me happy.

  39. Nice thoughts. I’m totally new but I’ve read the books several times. Um, the cluviel dor has rules. So Eric is so not gonna be human. As much as we may wish it. Why would Sookie wish to be a vamp??? She could just ask Eric to make her one…no doubt he’d be more than willing.

Like some enlightened person wrote, I too, would really like to see Eric make good on his promise to give everything up. He said he could love her, he says he does love her. So, I think the ultimate symbol of his devotion to Sookie (her being his wife) would be to defy Appius’ dying wish. Poetic! However, maybe his life will be at risk because of it, or maybe Queen Freyda will be so incensed, so offended that she requests Sookie head on a platter. Who Knows! But there is something going on with Sam and Sookie, that’s undeniable…in the latest short story “If I Had A Hammer” there’s next to no mention of Eric or any other vampires (Bill). Also, maybe that new character Qua-whatever the pyschic will have something to do with how things turn out. I see either Fintan or Sookie’s father returning to the story. If I had to choose, I’d prefer Fintan. But, storyline-wise the return of her father is much more dramatic and plays severely on the fact that Dermott’s whole ominous echo of : “Only HE (Dermott) could open/touch the car door” thing has some suspicion to it. Perhaps, her father was in hiding this whole time. I mean, Lochlan and Neave admitted to dismembering Fintan bit by bit, so his chances of survival seem slim to non-existent. I’m putting my money on Sookie’s dad being alive. Also, Charlaine Harris wanted to make Niall her real father (she blogged that) so she’s definitely searching for a father figure for her.

Also, the cluviel dor can’t take away telepathy, Cataliades said so. It also can not bring back the dead…only perhaps the instant before they died. Maybe Sookie will wish she never met any vamps, go back in time. I could see that. Someone said that already, and phrased it really well. But what about Hunter, I don’t think Sookie would want to give up the memory of the child. I actually hope she raises him. Also, the new book cover has werewolves all over it. Maybe that civil war that the books aways talk about will occur. I can wait for the first chapter read, I can’t wait until I own the entire collection series, all 13 books in my hands, AT LAST! I need to know how it all ends! I hope that it is dramatic. I also forsee Eric dying (if indeed he has to sever ties with Sookie). I just don’t see him living without her. She’s his alternate source of air(blood). Sookie can live without Eric, look how long it’s taken for her to settle into being his wife! But, I just can’t see the meaning in his existence without her. I mean look at Rhodes, when Eric came upstairs when Sookie found the bomb. He came up to die with her. And they weren’t even ihot and heavy like that yet.

    • See, I also considered the possibility of Eric dying. I would HATE that but it’s a very probable way for things to turn out. When thinking of Sookie and Eric, I think it’s also important to remember the blood bond being broken. Most of the dramatic/romantic exchanges between the two have be greatly impacted by the bond. Now it’s not there. This frees up Harris to make ANY changes at all to the relationship. ANYTHING could happen. )I think there was a lot of foreshadowing there toward the end of DR. The book did not end on a pleasant note for the two. All is not well between them.) And I am SO with you regarding Sookie becoming more Fae. I think you are on to something. There is definitely something going on there with her fairy kin. I think Sookie moving into the fairy realm would be a good ending to the series (although I know many of the Sookie-Eric romantics here would disagree).

      • CH has confirmed numerous times that Eric will NOT die, that Sookie will stay human (well, part-fairy human), and that she’ll have a partner at the end of the books.
She also recently said that the Fae part of the story will be pretty much wrapped up in Deadlocked.

        • Yeah, well, I’ve also heard that she has stated, in an interview, that Eric and Sookie won’t end up together. Who knows what’ll happen. Why would she tell us these things?

          • Well, in fact she doesn’t tell much at all. She’s very cagey with her answers on future events, but the few straight answers she gives are reliable.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that she has NEVER stated that Eric and Sookie won’t end up together. I bet whoever you heard that from couldn’t come up with a source if asked, because there is none.
CH is obviously not going to give away the most anticipated plot point of the series.

  40. I also hope that Sookie might become Fae. I hope that Claude and Dermott ARE indeed making her more fairy. That will also sever ties with her and Eric. Sookie will move on into the fae realm and secretly watch Hunter and Eric will become King of something substantial. But he has no desire to rule sooooo….back to square one. I sure hope that the books cover a lot of info. I’d hate for DeadLocked to have dull unnecessary parts and then be sloppily put together in the last book being full of coincidence and chance. I want the story though unbelievable to end believably. A bad ending can seriously lower the value of the previous books.

    • Sookie would NEVER want to lock herself up in the Fae Realm. That’s just not gonna happen. She doesn’t even want to leave her own house, nevermind permanently leaving EARTH!

  41. I think she might make Bill or Eric human! Technically, that’s bringing someone back to life!

  42. I think she has a possibility of settling with Sam. Her romance with Eric seems dimmer than what it was in previous books, and things with Bill didn’t work out the first time.
I think she might bring back Claudine maybe, for Niall and Claude’s happiness- or possibly Pam, as Pam is seen as one of Sookie’s closest friends.

  43. Maybe eric is made human for one night cause she did say that he maybe died by the next day . Maybe he is alive for one day long enough to get sookie prego. It might make for a good stoy?

  44. way too Twilight crystal. I just don’t see the cluvel dor making vampires human. I mean it can’t take away Soolie’s telepathy because it’s the core of her being…so, isn’t VAMPIRE the core of vampire-being. As in dead…already. Eric isn’t even a thousand, he’s OVER a thousand years old and losing track everyday. If Eric came back to life, in my opinion, he should get the flood of life in his cheeks just before he wrinkles, cracks, festers, and decays into a pile of sand. Very Dorian Gray style. I think even though he’d turn human he’d be a thousand and some change year old human. Yuck! Just my thought.

I also think that Sookie’s lack of the blood bond is responsible for her distancing herself from Eric. Remember when Sookie and Eric were riding back from seeing Niall at Le Duex Poissons….remember how Sookie’s emotions were so mixed up when Eric was devouring the werewolf (who pretended to be a police officer). Sookie thought it was gross, but she was happy that Eric was happy about getting the blood he lost. Remember how Sookie said that the blood bond made her view Eric and Bill as more human in her eyes. Well, if she still had that blood bond when Eric killed Victor, no doubt, she would have been elated and totally “Hip Hip- Hooray!” about it because her emotions would have been meshed with Eric’s. I think that for the first time in a long time Sookie is looking at Eric soberly and realizing that this is something that she doesn’t necessarily want to be involved in.

Also, in light of the cluviel dor, I think that Sookie would use it in behalf of Eric as we saw that she carried it, just in case, to the “Kill Victor Party/concert”. Don’t forget Sookie can use it to kill someone who was or is trying to kill someone she loves.

Now, that I think of it, it seems only likely that Sookie’s Father is alive because his death is the only death that is no described with depth. And if I learned anything from Scooby Doo, it’s that the character mentioned least is the culprit. Sookie’s parents are like the guy that sold Shaggy ice cream in the first five minutes of the episode, and then when you rip off the mask: “WELL,. WELL, lookey here!”

Maybe we’re making more of the cluviel dor than need bve. Maybe the simplest answer is the right one. Perhaps Sookie uses the wish to save herself. (If that’s possible, I mean Sookie loves herself too, right?) Anyway the covers full of werewolves, what going on Alcide??

  45. turn sookie so she and eric can be together for ever and she may even be a day walker because of the farie blood. just a thought

    • That’s never going to happen, Charlaine has made it very clear that Sookie won’t become a vampire. I don’t see that ever changing.

  46. Everybody keeps saying she won’t make Eric human because she won’t want to read his thoughts, but if you remember, while they had the blood bond, she had a pretty good idea what he was thinking by the tenor of his emotions. She’s been able to live with that, in fact, loved having that connection at some points, so I don’t see why she wouldn’t do it again. Just a thought.

  47. you know what would satisfy me….if Sookie would discuss or acknowledge to Eric that she sometimes gets glimpses of vampire minds. Like a scene where Eric is about to do something crazy, or is thinking something really dark, and Sookie’s like: “No, Eric don’t do it! (Don’t jump). Or like by mistake she answers something that Eric is thinking, and Eric is like: ” What did you say to me, how could you possibly know that I was thinking that.” Like one of those CH Sookie Stackhouse “Ah-Oh” moments.

Remember, when Sookie knew that Stan’s real name was Stanulis, or something like that. I hate for the novels to end without anyone (Eric) knowing that Sookie read his mind every now and again. It’s fate.

  48. I think that Fintan is a viable option since no one (not even readers) actually saw him die, however, I don’t think he would have let Niall contact Sookie if he was still alive. Unless he was perhaps held prisoner somewhere but I doubt Breandan would let him live. (No one saw Andre die but I doubt Quinn would have missed or convinced him to stay away from Sookie. No one saw Sophie-Ann die but I doubt the vamps would have let her live and Siebert wouldn’t have been so hell bent on vengeance.) Claude, Russell, Rene, Quinn, and Steve Newlin are still alive. (Steve got away, the vamps nor weres ever caught him in Josephines.) Charlaine has stated that Vamps cannot become human again, so I don’t think that anyone would be brought back not even by the cluviel dor. (If Sookie cannot get rid of her telepathy because it is a “part of her”, I doubt a vamps could be brought back.) Tray did not get his head cut off, he just got stabbed, but I doubt he would be brought back. I don’t think any of Sookie’s relatives would be brought back unless Sookie changed events wildly. She could use the cluviel dor to wish Bill had never come into the bar or Hadley had never met the queen, or (and I think this is highly possible) that vampires never “came out of the coffin” at all. That would stop Rene from killing people (including Gran), the weres would have not come out so Sam’s mom would not have been shot and Tray may not have died. It would probably save Sookie from a lot of hurt. (However, the fae would probably still have issues with her.) She could wish that she was product of Earl Stackhouse and not Fintan, but that might not be plausible since that, again, it is a part of her. Regardless, of everything I think that Sookie will find her HEA with Sam. They have chemistry and they respect each other and in the first book he was able to block her out (though at the time she didn’t realize how or why.) She likes his family, they could easily fall in (romantic) love, she can help him run his business and he could move into her house so it would stay in the family (even if their surname was not Stackhouse.) Regardless, if I am right or wrong and regardless who Sookie ends up with Charlaine will tie it together nicely and neatly with a perfect bow. What an AMAZING writer; easily my favorite writer! (One note, since Quinn kind of got paired with a tigress in Small Town Wedding I don’t think he will be Sookie’s man; I am happy about that. I never cared for Quinn. Also, as much as I love Eric and I love Eric and Sookie together I don’t think they will be together much longer. I was skeptical after Dead in the Family and Charlaine all but said it at the end of Dead Reckoning.)

  49. I think Sookie and Eric(yummy) won’t stay together 2, they make a wonderful couple but Eric is going to marry Queen of Oklahoma. I think Fintan is going to come back or Tray Dawnson maybe Alexei, I don’t know. But I miss Claudine on Dead Reckoning and Claude is to suspicious, I like Dermot his cute and I really want him to be Sookie’s lover. I know his her greatuncle (and maybe its kidda of sick) but I don’t care. They make such a cute couple and he kissed her once and I think he likes her not like a uncle cares for his nephew but like he reeeeeeeally likes her. I can’t wait for Deadlocked. If Erick ends with Sookie he could stay with me lolz

    • Okay, there is so much wrong with this comment, I can’t even. Never have I read something more cringe worthy.

      • Again I have to wonder why some of you come in here if that’s what you hope for when reading the books. Whether she ends up with Eric or not, there is no way she’s ever hooking up with Dermot. That’s wrong on so many levels.

  50. I think that she may have had someone maybe killed in the beginning of book 12 and has changed her mind part way through.

  51. Perhaps CH finds a way to keep Eric and Sookies relationship going long after the book. Considering there are only two books left, we have to think about how some things will end and others continue. Personally i would like for Sookie to do a very selfish thing and use the cluviel dor on herself. We all know that probaly wont happen, but think of the possibilities! Her ultimate wish could be for happiness with Eric, which could make her IMMORTAL! That way she can live a long life with the one she loves. Its kind of rash to think about but it would be a very sweet alternative for the use of the cluviel dor. Maybe immortal is a little drastic, she could become more fae to have a prolonged life. Thus allowing the relationship between Eric and Sookie to continue. Could be epic!

  52. Maybe she uses the cluviel dor to allow it so she and Eric can concieve a child together or to make Eric able to rise and be out in the sunlight, then they can have a more normal relationship. Whatever CH decides I hope Sookie and Eric stay together. Also on CH
Website she states that she doesn’t know when she will stop writing about Sookie but at this stage she has a contract to write up to book 13 so surely there may be more to come. I really do hope so, I can’t put these books down.

  53. I think it’ll be Fintan that comes back in Deadlocked, but I almost hope it won’t as I’d love to be surprised by Charlaine Harris yet again!

  54. Sookie has broken the blood-bond with Eric. Eric has to set her aside to married the Queen of Ok. – Once this happens she will not have any binding connections to Eric. Basically she’s open game. She can’t get w/Sam because – He’s pretty much a lonewolf – no pack. She can get w/Alcide but I think she’s decided she doesn’t really like him anymore due to personality changes (pack master). Jannalynn can’t really hurt Sookie because Sookie is a friend of the pack – and Jannalynn is pack loyal – unless her feelings for Sam override her loyalty – I don’t see her attacking Sookie. Quinn (weretiger) is not in the picture – I think she figures he has more baggage than even she does. If she gets involved w/any Twoey – then she is still open to the Vampires forcing her to their services. I think that Eric truly loves Sookie – BUT his “maker” has forced his hand into the marriage w/Queen OK. However, Sookie did save Felipes “life” and he stated that he is in her debt. She could call in the debt and request Eric be release from the agreement between Eric’s maker and the Queen of OK. Therefore, she and Eric can actually get “married” or she can realize she is tired of the battles – and walk away, but that leaves her vulnerable. The other option is her relationship w/Bill. The history is there – he has told her he still loves her and wants her back. She will then still have the protection of the pack as pack friend and the Vamps can’t touch her because she has been “claimed”. Bill is also reserved, quite, and successful – not political – he can offer her the protection – but I think a dull life. She won’t choose to leave Bon Temps because of the family home – 150 yrs old – who walks away from a home that’s been the in the family that long? The “love token” she inherited from her Gran and Finton can be used for ONE wish – which is granted out of love – but can’t change who she is – Telepathy. She can use that wish to bring back her parents – therefore NONE of this would have happened. There is someone who might have been thought as “dead” but is not – or can be brought back. I can see Bill wanting to spend his life w/her and die eventually of old age –I can’t see Eric giving up the Vamp life for anyone – He has just too much fun! – I can see him wishing her to join him. CH needed to kill Victor off – he limited Eric too much and actually had to give up some of his character traits because of his limitations. My vote is that she is able to release Eric from the obligation with Queen OK. She can then “wish” to stay immortal with the token using the love she has for Eric. She will not be Vamp but she will also not die. Another option, Sookie gets seriously injured during the Kidnapping – she then has to go to the fae world to be saved and Eric is left waiting for her.

  55. she will use the cluviel to bring back Miriam to Pam, who is her friend.
