Charlaine Mentioned in TV Shows VS. Books Article

There was an article published recently showcasing TV shows returning that started off as books. Of course, True Blood was mentioned and Charlaine Harris shared her thoughts too! We thought you might be interested in reading what they had to say! Charlaine had some great things to say about Alan Ball’s interpretation of her books.

Read on…

Take poor Calvin Norris, for example. In Charlaine Harris’ series about telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse and her various supernatural loves, Calvin is a courtly, hard-working man who also happens to be the head honcho of werepanther stronghold Hot Shot. On “True Blood,” HBO’s highly-rated adaptation, he’s a baddie who gets offed in the third season finale.

They’re not the same, and they haven’t had the same experiences.

“He’s a nice guy in the books, and he’s a meth-dealing illiterate on the show, and I just feel so bad about Calvin,” Harris said. “I’ve always been real fond of him. Poor Calvin, and he’s dead now.”

When “True Blood” creator Alan Ball was, in Harris’ words, “courting” her, he warned her that his show would take on its own life. He did, in fact, breathe new life into secondary characters, transforming Sookie’s friend Tara from a flighty boutique owner into a smart-talking, tough-as-nails bartender and, this season, bisexual cage fighter, and saving Lafayette, the fabulously fey short-order cook, from a grisly death early in the series.

Ball hasn’t hesitated to fast-forward plot twists from later books (fairies!), amp up the kink significantly (“Exorcist” sex!) and draw explicit political parallels between vampire rights and the gay rights movement.

“Like any fan of Alan Ball, I’m always interested in what he’s putting on the screen in front of us,” Harris said diplomatically. “Alan’s a genius. That having been said, there are some parts of it, like any other series, that I find more interesting than other parts.”

Harris, who just released “Dead Reckoning,” her 11th Sookie Stackhouse novel, said she’s got two more planned for the series, but doesn’t know whether her ending, happy or otherwise, will match Ball’s.

Has she ever been tempted to tinker in the “True Blood” writing room herself?

“My head would spin around so much, I would never get it back on straight if I switched from the television ‘True Blood’ back to my version,” Harris laughed. “I just couldn’t do it. They’re not the same, and they haven’t had the same experiences. I just think I would go nuts trying to do that.”

This article mentions Game of Thrones as being one that follows the books very closely and if it didn’t…the whole tapestry could fall apart! Hmmm…I wonder, do you think the same could be said for the Sookie Stackhouse novels?

You can read the entire article here!

I’m not sure about what you think, but I wish Alan Ball followed Charlaine’s books more closely than he does, especially when it comes to Eric and Sookie. The fact that an another successful HBO show, Game of Thrones, is still interesting to those who have read the books (myself included), proves that knowing the outcome of the series is just an excuse he uses to justify how he took the series and decided to write his own version. This has a name for it – it’s called fanfiction.

Alan Ball has said it himself…“The books work.” If that is so, then why all the changes, like Bill staking Longshadow instead of Eric? Yes, I’m still bitter about that one…

Now, before you get into it – I know that the books are from Sookie’s POV. The development of other characters on the show is essential to the series, but to me, they have taken over the show to the point that Eric and Sookie have no more than maybe ten minutes maximum in an episode. WTF? None of the storylines mesh well with the main one, which should be Eric and Sookie’s epic love story. Oh wait…we don’t even have that do we? This is where Alan Ball has FAILED in his attempt to adapt the books into a screen version.

There’s many great fanfic writers who could do a better job of writing True Blood, IMO.

  1. yeah I didn’t like what Alan did with the whole hot shot thing either, especially the rape thing, I thought it was very tasteless

    • I think what most people don’t really care for is that on true blood he turned sookie/bill into a romeo and juliet love story when
in the books its sookie/eric that is the love story….why AB did that is baffling to most people that love sookie stackhouse.

      • The fact that Ball has turned Bill and Sookie into the main couple on the show (also maybe because the actors who play them are married), is the thing that most people are critisizing, and the funny thing is, even though Ball has tried his best to butcher Eric and Sookies relationship, they still are more popular than Bill and Sookie; and the love triangle that they really made over the top especially this season is was definitely too much, really destroys everything; I cannot recognize most of the book characters anymore, I think when you claim that you wnt to stay true to the spirit of the books you should at least stay true to the character trades of the book characters…but True blood sookie is now so nothingl like book sookie, I have become to hate TB Sookie, she is just too annoying and constantlyforgives Bill every crap he does, like she forgot the whole rat reveall after a week or so, its just too stupid… the anger from the season 3 final is just gone, and she even asked him for forgiveness, wtf has AB done with her character, she is so weak!!!!

        • The fan fiction ” The Arrangement ” by the Texan Lady is much more better, believable and in better taste than the books or True Blood. I wished she would have written for the TV series so we could actually be watching her version. She is so engrossing that I could not put her stories down until I finished reading them but she is taking Eric and Sookie in the direction I am happy with. An epic Love Story for all time. Wouldn’t be nice if they would do some roles together in other movies. Their chemistry is awesome.

  2. I understand they wanted to create a reason for Bill to be maker, and I’m fine with that. Jessica is a good vehicle to explain things about vampires to the viewing audience that can’t always be adequately portrayed since we’re lacking Sookie’s inner dialog on the show, I just wish they created a different reason. I really liked that it was Eric that staked Long Shadow. I’m sure they can likewise come up with a different reason for revenge if they bring in Charles Twining, but I always took Eric staking Long Shadow as one of his first acts of love for her, even if he didn’t realize that’s why he was doing it.

  3. *****BOOK SPOILERS*****
I think that Alan Ball has messed things up. COME on the Shower scene for instance! And I feel you about the Bill staking Long shadow! I am kinda pissed off about that too! Let alone the things that they have taken out of the show that should have been there in the first place like in book 2 “Living Dead in Dallas” where Sookie goes to the Orgy with Eric! I would have LOVED seeing Alex in that outfit!!!! And in Book 3 “Club Dead” the bars are different and Sookie gets Staked… And who is there to save her yet again?…. ERIC is! I would have loved to see that and see the scene where they are on the bed and he is giving her blood to heal and save BILL all by her SELF. Not to mention that she TOTALLY calls Bill NO NAME after the 3rd BOOK for a long while. She’s so pissed at him but in the show she forgives him like she does WTF. Yes the books are through the eyes of Sookie but the way they could have changed that would have been the in between plots with the other characters, at least keep the main Sookie Storyline … I started off with the show, and watched it for the first time mid 3rd season, I started watching it on demand with the 2nd season then watched most of what was on for the 3rd and then the 1st.. I loved it tons more then but then I READ THE BOOKS and Fell in LOVE with them MORE!! Charlaine Harris is WONDERFUL and sure is Alan Ball with he’s other shows but he totally messed this one up big time! I Would have LOVED to see BUBBA! He makes me smile every time I read him in the books! And its just so sad that they Ended this season on TB like they did, Her with ERIC and Bill….. WTF Alan Ball???? I can deal with some changes, I LOVE LALA and im glad they kept him, I love Jessica too, But I cant stand what they made Sam out to be… I could go on and on LOL like with the fare and fairy land wtf again. My husband watches True Blood with me and hes NEVER READ the books due to the fact that he dont want to HATE the show. Its depressing what all has been changed!!!!!

  4. All I keep hearing is what a genius Alan Ball is and I’m sick of it. All I have seen is him take a very popular best selling book series and ruin it. Why does True Blood not win any awards? I’ll bet if he followed the books even a little it would. He is just trying to turn a small minor part (Bill after the second book) into the Hero. The books are a love story between Eric and Sookie not Bill and Sookie.
If Ball is so in love with SM why didn’t he just bleach Moyer’s hair, have him stand on a box for all his scenes and cast him as Eric. The show is just ridicules any more. There are more made up story lines than book stuff anymore. And don’t think for one minute that bookies don’t matter, if it wasn’t for us, it never would have been made into a tv series.
Sorry about the rant, I’m still pissed about the season ending.

    • You should be ranting about this…..I am gonna give AB this season and see if he has Eric and Sookie heading toward a relationship by the end of season 5 if not then he has ruined the show period!

      • After the finale I think he’s already ruined the show – the little Eric and Sookie we got was only a bone thrown to Eric and Sookie fans – you can be sure that season 5 will set the scene for the return of Sookie and Bill – what a disgrace.

        • I am probably a fool for believing that AB is not a stupid man and he must come to the realization that eric and sookie are a beautiful couple with chemistry and that if he persist s in not getting them together that he will start to lose a large per engage of his viewers….who are bookies

  5. Yeah, I’m still bitter about the Longshadow thing too. . . AB sucks. If his version of the books were a fanfiction instead of TV, I think it could rival “My Immortal.”

  6. I so agree with you about the screen time that Eric and Sookie have particularly in the season of Eric and Sookie where they were sometimes hardly seen in episodes where they should have been fleshing out their characters. I just watched the interview AS did with Keifer Sutherland about Melancholia and it occured to me when I saw AS so enthused that he will almost certainlt quit True Blood because his talent is being taken serioulsy by film makers in a way that Alan Ball just doesn’t. Why would AS want to hang around a show that just destroys his character. I know that AS has read the books so he will know that his character Eric has been erased of nearly all his plot lines.

Shame on Alan Ball for wasting not only the talent of AS but also of AP who could have been great with AS – they could have been one of those really memorable on screen couples instead of which AS has been watered down and AP has just become the love interest but not of Eric no the love interest of Bill. True Blood Season 4 has really depressed me and I hate Alan Ball for what he has done to my Sookie.

  7. I’m glad I’m not the only one pissed about AB’s interrpetation of Sookie. This last season was supposed to be “our” season and it fell short. He didn’t deliver and it pains me to hear him say things like, “the books work” and that he’ll follow the “spirit of the books” when he clearly doesn’t!! Clearly, I’m still very bitter.

  8. I think it’s just more proof that he’s never actually read them.

  9. I so agree with you there. The biggest travesty of all is what has been done to the lead character on the show. Correction – she should be the lead character on the show but is in fact only the love interest, she does very little mystery solving and appears to lack a brain cell in her head. Alan Ball has destroyed the character traits of a lot of characters but Sookie is the most removed from her book personality. Alan Ball is destroying True Blood and should hang his head in shame.

  10. [...]  Charlaine Comments On Alan Ball’s True Blood [...]

  11. I’m reading the books again, for about the third
time, and Sookie is laugh out loud funny! She just cracks me up… And she can kick butt! I just really love her and I so hope she and Eric continue their romance, because rereading the books you remember how Bill hurt and betrayed her so very badly!!!

  12. Count me in! I’m still bitter about that scene of Bill staking Long Shadow instead of Eric. AB just totally murdered this show. If he didn’t give us what we want he will loose a lot of viewers. The one who made this series a success (aside from Harris imaginative mind, of course), are the readers. We WANT THE MEAT!!! Not just a BONE! A BARE BONE at that!!!!
