Charlaine’s Thoughts On EW.com’s Best & Worst of 2011

Earlier last week, Charlaine Harris posted her thoughts on her blog about EW.com’s Best & Worst of 2011, in which her novel, Dead Reckoning was featured as one of the worse of the year, coming in at #5.

This is what Charlaine said about it over at her blog;

I was in the pages of EW again in the year-end issue: “Best and Worst of 2011.” My book, DEAD RECKONING, was designated one of the worst of the year, along with a book by the ubiquitous Kardashians and one by Snooki of “Jersey Shore” fame.

At first I really couldn’t believe it. Though I fully realized DEAD RECKONING was not a perfect book, I knew I’d read worse during 2011. Then I realized that the criteria must have been, “bad books by someone famous.” Still, it stung pretty badly, as you can imagine.

I was pretty philosophical about the experience until my inner insecurities began to plague me. Most writers have plenty of those, beginning with the suspicion that we are actually no good at all and that someday someone will discover this . . . no matter how healthy our bank account may be, or how brisk sales have been.

I was secretly hoping my agent would challenge the article’s writer to a duel. Then I realized that if anyone did that, it should be me, and I was feeling way too pitiful.

I hope I don’t experience anything more humiliating in my professional life. This kind of capped off a very eventful 2011 for me, because I’ve had a number of thunderbolts, both personal and professional. Next year simply HAS to be better.

We wanted you to share your thoughts about this. Do you agree or disagree with EW.com?

I happen to disagree, especially since DR is lumped in with the Kardashians and Snooki! In fact, while there were some things I disliked about DR, there were more things that I liked about it and it should’ve been named one of the best books of the year!

To Charlaine, please don’t take this too hard. We love your writing and wish to thank you for creating this world in which all of us love! We are your fans and we will continue to buy your books, no matter what the critics say! Do what we do…ignore them! Please know that there’s many of us who are anxiously awaiting Deadlocked!

  1. I LOVE YOUR BOOKS . I JUST WISH THAT TRUE BLOOD WAS BETTER AT WRITING THE SHOW CLOSER TO THE BOOKS .. I REALLY FEEL CHEATED WITH THE ERIC PARTS AND SOOKIE THE ARE SUPPOSE TO BE TOGETHER . AB WRITING THE STORIES TO FIT BILL AND I DON`T LIKE THAT HE IS NOT BETTER THAN ERIC IN NO SHAPE OR FORM .. TEAM ERIC ALL THE WAY FOR ME ..I HOPE WE GET IT AT THE END OF SEASON 5 . SOOKIE NEEDS TO COME TO REALITY . ERIC IS THE ONE FOR HER . I STILL LOVE YOUR BOOKS . THEY ARE WONDERFUL STORIES THEY HAVE ME HOOKED . I HOPE ERIC AND SOOKIE ARE TOGETHER IN THE END OF THE BOOK SERIES WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE

  2. Truthfully, I believe that EW was correct in stating that CH’s DR was one of the worst books of 2011. The continuity problems with the storylines (which for CH is not unusual for her writings), the boring way it was written, like she left the “heart” out of it. It really wasn’t her best writing, like some of the earlier from the series. I will be reading DL because I have read every book in the series and I am determined to finish the series to the end, bad or not. Of course, like everyone else here, I do hope that S & E get back together and have a HEA, although I don’t really feel in my heart that CH will write a HEA at all. I feel that CH will have Sookie go it alone in the end, which will make me even angrier in the long run that I wasted all those years and hard earned money on all those books.

I just hope that book 13 will live up to the end……….

    • well, I agree it wasn’t HER best writing, but one of the worst books of the year?
NO WAY. There’s so much complete and utter garbage even by “famous” writers to choose from, that I can’t believe they chose her.

As for Sookie ending up alone, that’s just not gonna happen. Doesn’t make sense in the narrative, all her heroines end up with someone, AND she’s confirmed it herself.

  3. I’m not surprised, but as I have said before, I didn’t love or hate the book. Although, I will be waiting for the reviews of Deadlocked to come in before I even consider buying it.

  4. I have to agree with EW. Although I love Sookie and Eric, I feel Mrs. Harris writing is just not up to par. She probably should have already ended the series, but I know he was under obligation to her publisher. I believe she already admitted that she was going to kill Bill but caved to her publishers and didn’t , I just feel she has sold out due to the show. There’s no way to know, but I don’t feel we’re reading the same books that would have been had it not been for True Blood.

    • I could not agree more, it’s just really disappointing how easily she gets persuaded.

    • Sadly, I have to agree with EW. Maybe her book could not be in the same category with other rubbish they put there, but also find that she should end the series with book 9 or 10. Everything about new books seems very much influenced by the succes of True Blood, so it seems to me that it is all about money, and nothing about Sookie, her story or Eric. I really liked this series, as much as I liked TB since second half of the season 4. Hopefully she wouldn’t dissapoint us as Alan Ball did.

  5. well, i don´t think it belongs to that list, there are by far much worse books out there, like some already mentioned, the last 2 books haven´t reallt been her best, i also think that her writing got kind of influenced by true blood, another reason to hate the show noeadays…

  6. EW definitely got the attention by using CH and her great books – this just proves how popular the books have become. More power CH – we love your books and WE are the people whose opinion I think really matters because WE only not know the books very well but fell in love with the characters and the story. I’ll bet EW did not even read the previous 10 books same as DR word for word and cover to cover. I’ll be more accepting if the list were made by highly acclaimed critics like Lev Grossman, Norman Rush among others. I won’t also mind if it is the list made by Oprah Winfrey. We love you CH!!!

  7. Well, the list is probably more subjective than objective and considering some of the criticism I’ve seen regarding the book? I’m not surprised. There are a LOT of people who are not happy with the Bill/Sookie scene considering the fact that Bill is a rapist and Sookie can’t seem to remember that in this particular book considering her behavior. Not only that, people aren’t too pleased with Sookie’s behavior overall, so yeah, I can see how this would wind up on a list.

Sadly, CH is going to have to get used to this. Fail/disappoint your fans by catering to the wrong part of the fandom or by catering to HBO by filler b/s and not killing of characters when you planned and this is the price you pay. She should have known better.

The reason a lesser known novel isn’t on here is because it doesn’t have as much exposure. That’s the price you pay for fame. This is what CH can expect if she decides on a non Eric/Sookie ending.

Pay attention CH. Am I saying this is the worst novel ever? No. Am I saying I understanding how it got here? Yes.

  8. I think it’s very sad DR was on this list. It was by far not up to par with the rest of the series, but definitely not that BAD. I hope Ms. Harris can get back to her fantastic self and give Sookie another great story.
