SFX Vampire Special Edition

SFX Magazine has released their Special Vampire Edition – featuring True Blood, Twilight, Underworld, The Vampire Diaries – plus a lot more fangy goodness which will satisfy your bloodlust!

In the True Blood feature, there’s a debate on whether or not the show is still as great as it once was.

Here are some highlights from the debate;

From Meg Wilde:

“Let’s face it, the love story between Sookie and Bill ran out of steam by the end of season one.”

“…along came Eric to steal Sookie’s heart. But effectively all this plot twist did was undermine Sookie as a character.”

“…isn’t it about time Sookie stuck off on her own to regain her self-respect?”

“…the biggest reason why True Blood has lost its way: it has too many characters.”

From Will Salmon:

“Even in a duff episode, you can always rely on Lafayette or Jessica or Eric to liven things up.”

“Sure, she finally shagged Eric, and had plenty of opportunity with Alcide, but by the end she had decided to do things on her terms. Hopefully that means a break from the endless rounds of break up/make up between her and Bill.”

“…when Eric did go back to normal, he retained some of his new characteristics. He’s a different person now. A fuller, much more complex character. Let’s see some more of that next year.”

One of our very own Eric & Sookie Lovers – eviehellosweetheart, (who posted that wonderful article about Eric making #2 on the Top 50 Vampires on SFX list) lives in the UK and was able to get her hands on a copy and scanned them for us! But since this is in the middle of the night for her, she passed them on to me to share with you! Thanks Evie and Swede dreams! *hugs*

Seriously? I think this is one of the best articles I have ever read!

Meg Wilde seems to know exactly what we’ve been complaining about for months now! I loved what she said about Eric and Sookie! Although, Will Salmon seems to have a different view, he said some great things about Eric’s character.

  1. Okay, I agree with some of what was said and of course, not others. First, I am so sick of the Bill and Sookie Show that I can hardly stand another moment of it. It was very refreshing to have Sookie with Eric.

And Eric is the main draw for this show from my perspective and that of my friends. We fell in love with him in S1, and that emotion has not flagged for 4 S.s. He never falls to steal every scene he is in by the pure animal magnetism and charm instilled in him by his true Maker, Alex Skarsgard. The man is amazing as an actor not to mention his looks… which, well.

Besides Eric, Pan and Jessica are the next most interesting characters. I hate to say it, but Sookie is rather boring. She is so fickled that I find her just annoying. You don’t go through all she went through with Eric to then say the problem between them is Bill. And the 3some dream sequence was just another bit of annoyance for me. I cannot believe that any redblooded woman who had experienced all she did with the innocent Eric would NOT want to see what it would be like with the Old/New Eric.

I loved the switch from Hoyt to Jason for Jessica. It was fresh and interesting to me. My annoyance with the entire show was the way a plot thread was introduced, then just dumped for no apparent reason. It just kept going off in tangents. It’s becoming schizophrenic. Having said that… I can hardly wait for S5!

  2. I agree, great article. Like Will, I too agree that Eric is now a fuller and more complex character. You could see the shift in him after he regained his memory in Season 4. And that’s largely thanks to Alexander’s great acting. I am ready to be disappointed that there won’t be focus on Eric and Sookie’s relationship in season 5, however I hope and pray that Eric’s character will continue to be allowed to grow and this journey will take him back to Sookie. Like the above comment, Eric is THE character that draws me and my friends to True Blood. Not only is he easy on the eye, Alex manages to make every scene his. to It’s not just the fans of the book who want Sookie and Eric together, but I’m sure so too the legions of TB fans. Therefore, to keep the audience interested and coming back, they need to elevate Eric as the hero next to Sookie. Not Bill.

  3. Very positive article for Eric. Fan favorite and the best of True Blood.

  4. Thanks for those scans. SFX is a very respected magazine in UK. I’ll be hunting this out today. They talk a lot of sense.

  5. I love the criticism they have about True blood, it is so true what they are saying, and definitely Alex/ Eirc is the main draw of the show, even though alan ball probably thinks differently, you just have to look at fan reactions on panel events and lots of people are only watching the show for him nowadays because it has become so bad…

  6. Eric is the most interesting character of the show and Alexander Skarsgård is a superb actor.

  7. Alexander Skarsgard is outstanding love the articles about Eric and Sookie he is more open now . Eric is the one i love the most on the show and can`t wait for to see his films and season 5 ..Alex gets the highest cheers when he at he panels whatever …. he definitely is the star of Trueblood he is a leading A-list man

  8. I agree with the Eric statements. I personally wouldn’t even look at this show anymore if they were to kill him off or something drastic. (doubt that) the way he stills a scene with his swagger, his looks, his overall love/hate attitude, it’s all perfect for the storylines and they cast this character perfectly with Alexander.

I’m getting tired of the meaningless sexual adventures all over the place. It seems like characters are just bouncing around for the sake of sex. I.e. Jason/Hoyt/Jessica. The sex is getting a little old, still appealing, but predictable.

I’ve heard in an interview that alcide is going to have a major change and go completely in the other direction. That he’s not gonna be the nice guy so much and is not afraid to “pin you up against a wall”. I’ve liked alcide from the beginning, so I hope his role gets deeper. If he doesn’t, it’s truly a waste of Joes perfect body.

I’m currently reading the books. So, I have no idea what’s going to happen with all the cliffhangers. My eyes are going mainly towards Steve newlin and whatever happened there. Closely followed by the casting of Christopher meloni in a still secret role… I’ll definitely be back for season 5!!!

  9. It was slightly embarrassing queuing to buy a magazine with Twilight on the cover, I could see the guy behind the counter was thinking ,seriously, at your age? LOL It was worth it, if you are a vamp fan, there was Spike, Being Human, loads of good stuff.

  10. what is also good about the article is that they don’t hang onto the paquin moyer thing so much and don’t plaster bill pictures all over the place, in fact, they focused on the more popular characters:)

  11. I agree with everyone about eric, I too think the whole bill sookie on off and on agin relationship is too drawn out. sookie should be with eric. The show will be way better if this happens
