It’s Official! Alan Ball Stepping Down From True Blood

When this news first broke…we posted it here, but it was only rumors at the time. Thanks to EW.com, we now have official statements from HBO and Alan Ball!

HBO has released this statement;

“When we extended our multi-year overall deal with Alan Ball in July 2011, we always intended that if we proceeded to True Blood’s sixth season that Alan would take a supervisory role on the series and not be the day-to-day showrunner.  If we proceed to season six, the show will remain in the very capable hands of the talented team of writers and producers who have been with the show for a number of years.  This is the best possible world for both HBO and Alan Ball.  Alan will remain available as executive producer to consult and advise on True Blood and he will be free to develop new shows for both HBO and Cinemax. Banshee, on which Alan serves as executive producer, is the first in house series for Cinemax and is expected to begin production this spring.”

Notice how HBO says, “IF” True Blood is renewed for a sixth season? It sounds like it’s a pretty big “IF” at this point. Hmmm…

Alan Ball released in this statement;

True Blood has been, and will continue to be, a highlight of not only my career but my life.  Because of the fantastic cast, writers, producers and crew, with whom I have been lucky enough to work these past five years, I know I could step back and the show will continue to thrive as I look forward to new and exciting ventures.”

Now it’s time to get to speculating…

Who do you think should replace Alan Ball as head writer? Do you think they could do a better job? Will they be able to turn this show around, or make it possibly worse?

  1. I think pretty ANYBODY could do a better job! (Of course, I might eat those words once I see Season 5). It does give me hope. I’m not worried about them canceling it. They say IF for legal reasons so no one can come back later and said HBO insinuated there would be be a season 6.

  2. Hmm. I think the best way to speculate on AB leaving and how it will affect upcoming seasons is to compare the situation to other popular shows that experienced the same thing. For me one of those shows would be the CW’s SUPERNATURAL. A couple years ago they experienced a few growing pains, a major part of the behind the scenic crew died and that sad change was followed by the creator and writer leaving. I think that’s how it went anyway. Almost immediately the next season was complete shit, I mean I am a faithful watcher of the show and not kidding I had to hide small items because they constantly got thrown at the flat screen. Not good. The shit continued into another season and I was on the fence about ever spending my Friday nights with these characters again. But, then the third season after all the changes arrived (the current season by the way) and miraculously they seemed to have gotten their mojo back. All I’m saying is change isn’t always good right away. But I’m loyal even if it’s painful and hopefully that loyalty will pay-off with a kickass season….eventually.

    • season 4 was horrible, and AB was also responsible for this, don’t think that the show can even get worse, unless they will continue to shove bill down our throats, at least Bills biggest supporter has left now, but like already mentioned, its too late now…they can’t really fix it anymore and TB Sookie is extremely unlikable at this point…

      • Yeah S4 definitely stunk up the room but I think that’s mainly because AB drifted so far away from the relationship between S&E that we all love so much. Changing the shower scene was just unforgettable IMO. And to me it showed great disrespect for the original work. I don’t understand why the relationship written by CH is so belittled on tue series.

  3. The thing to remember is that filiming was underway already when he stepped down, so his smudgeprints will be on the first half of the season.

  4. I think they should have CH jump on as head writer! How awesome would that be?!?!

  5. its already too late, season 4 was a mess and the other writers are probably all brainwashed with balls bill love, so the adventures of Beehl are continuing, would be nice if there is a change, but don’t think they will do it now…

    • I totally agree. he was the one who started this shity show in the first place. It still goes down hill when he’s gone. I’m really pissed that everyone decided to join in the bandwagon and literally get overboard with this whole “bill is the man” crap. WTF.

  6. Iwish him nothing but the best he did give us this show with wonderful casting . I love the show and hope that it does go many more seasons to come . Besides he introduce Alexander to the world it made him a big household name . the cast is awesome all of them so i am grateful plus i love other work Alan Ball has done to groundbreaking shows so please remember that man is a genius

  7. I’d have Alexander Woo please (or Nancy Oliver if she is still there).

  8. Since AB is gone or is going i would like to.ask him what from CH books did he get an idea that Bill is so loveable and a heroic character from? In the books he is a liar, a manipulator. a cheater and let’s not forget a rapist as well……why did he give him all these qualities based on? I have never understood this reason…..I just want an answer to that question…..

    • He’s been all that on the show too. I just don’t know where he got the idea that Sookie forgave him for it.

      • So then why destroy your lead character sookie by having her keep this no account character Bill as a romantic option…..let alone ask for forgiveness for what which we all still don’t know for?

  9. Does it actually say if he already LEFT or is leaving? I think all the episodes (or most of them) for this season are already written, and I bet AB will leave with everything planned as he likes. I hope I’m wrong and that we see an improvement during season 5, but I doubt it…. Hopefully there will be a season 6, and it better be awesome.

    By the way, is it known if any of the current writers are Eric lovers?

  10. I think the cast are amazing… However the writing for season 4 has been awful, though it pains me to say it. It couldn’t be any worse with new writers.. Season 4 is showing in uk at the moment. Perhaps the bad reviews has had HBO worried about losing more viewers. AB has ruined the basis of the books for me. There are way too many other characters in season 4 and season 5 by the look of the casting calls… It’s just too much fluff and not enough substance. I was a huge fan of six feet under until AB screwed up the last series and it got weird, depressing and screwed with the characters…. The sooner AB goes the better…

  11. Since he has already strayed so far from the books I can’t think that there is any way to get this show back on track. I think the writing staff is still in his pocket and will continue to give us “The Bill Show” with too much Alcide on the side. The only thing I am holding out hope for is that they repair the rift between Eric and Pam because they are the only two that keep me coming back for more and they are so wonderful together. There is more chemistry between these two then all the other characters combined.

  12. TB is so bad now that it can’t go worse than that. Well, I’m hoping her mega big time. Whoever is replacing AB should learn from his shortcomings and miscalculations and the best advice of all- go out and listen to what viewers and fans are screaming about.

  13. Deborah Court to replace Alan Ball!!!!

  14. I’m glad to see that he is stepping down. It does not mean the show will get better. The writers that are left came from the school of AB, and that doesn’t mean they will change. Someone somewhere is not happy with the way things are going with the show. Maybe things will change and maybe it’s to late. If the ratings improve along with the stories maybe all our bitching about AB will have been worth it. I for one hope so.

  15. I think it’s a case of to little, to late !

  16. I am so not sad to see AB going. I love the books and the show but he fudged up so many things its not even funny. There are scenes in seasons 1-4 that make you say “What the..”. Mostly because they come out of nowhere and weren’t even in the book to begin with. I want a writer who’s going to change course and move a bit towards the books. And for pete sake enough with the whole “Bill is the man” thing.
