Wetpaint Entertainment chatted with Giles Matthey, who is playing Claude in True Blood Season 5! We know this storyline won’t be involving Eric directly, but it will be involving Sookie – as you’ll soon find out! That’s why we’re sharing it with you!
WARNING: If you don’t want to know – don’t read below!
Below is a portion of their interview with Giles Matthey!
What can you tell us about Claude?
He plays quite a prominent role in the books. But True Blood and the Charlene Harris novels they’re very different and there’s no secret to it. Claude is a fairy and he is related to Sookie’s grandfather who was part fairy or even full fairy.
In the book, he was a really pretty bodybuilder/insane body male stripper and just uber hunk. They’ve gone slightly for a different Claude in picking me [laughs]. I don’t have any muscle mass and I wouldn’t say I’m a hunk of 2012 or anything.
Without giving too much away he kind of goes into Sookie being a fairy and what that means to her and what that means to the fairies in general. He has sisters as well, quite a few sisters.
It will be really interesting to see, because last season, the fairies were portrayed in such a way and it will be interesting to see how the audience views fairies in this up-and-coming season and on.
So, we learn more about fairydom?
Yeah, there is a focus on fairies. That’s not exactly a secret, with all the casting calls. I’ve been a real geek because I love to see who’s been cast.
A lot of questions are answered regarding that whole side to True Blood. It’s always evolving. These writers are so good at what they do …. Some of the dialogue is just amazing and borderline outrageous, which is just brilliant.
What else can you say about season 5?
They’re coming to the end of the season …. It’s all building up to something. And I have absolutely no idea what it’s building up to.

I don’t know…if the last couple of seasons are any indication of what we can expect for season 5, then we’re probably going to be disappointed once again. I am curious to find out how they’re going to destroy change the character of Claude on True Blood. I just hope they won’t take up too much time on-screen, away from our couple and that this storyline will make sense.
It certainly seems like Giles Matthey has read the books though!
What are your thoughts? Please share ‘em below!

I saw this interview on Wetpaint last night and found it very interesting for a few reasons.
1) Giles looks like a young Orlando Bloom to me, which I find odd since it makes me think they are really going the “fairy” route with Claude, totally opposite of his book persona.
2) The plot definitely sounds like there is going to be some more help for Sookie in understanding WTF is going on with her being part fae. That may explain why in the trailer we saw her using her power against Pam. She might be learning to control things better… or not. We will have to see.
3) There is OBVIOUSLY a HUGE change from book Claude to show Claude. Yes, most changes from the book to the show have been disastrously disappointing to us fans, but not ALL. May I point out Godric??? Unless I’m mistaken, AB’s interpretation and Allan Hyde’s portrayal of Godric (changed drastically from the book’s Godfrey) was HUGELY loved and a fan favorite. Perhaps, and I know this is going out on a limb here, PERHAPS, changing Claude from the almost lacking in any favorable qualities other than physical appearance book version (seriously, aside from possibly wanting to have sex with him IF he was straight and promised not to speak, what was likeable about him?) to a character on the show with a redeeming personality who is helpful to his fae-hybrid relative Sookie and looks cute (though not hunky) while doing it doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Right?
4) I LOVED how he described the other actors on the show as being family-like. It makes me happier to know I watch a show where the people behind the characters aren’t assholes. There is nothing that disappoints me more than to find out my favorite characters turn out to be played by total divas that I hate as real people. The whole concept ends up with me torn over whether I should actually like them as much as I do, even though it isn’t their character that is the problem.
Overall, we already know S5 is going to be lacking in S/E time, so I’m hoping what else we see is not overly disappointing. I’m not looking forward to the whole “were” plotline, but I can deal with the fairies since that will at least involve Sookie and give some background and depth to her character (hopefully) that has been becoming a bit pathetic lately.
Well, after reading the above and the article, I must say I feel a little better about him playing Claude, as he isn’t the Claude from the books. Of course he wouldn’t be, not a whole heck of alot is from the books in this show any longer anyway.
I sure hope that they can pull the fairies out of the shit that AB put them in last season. I mean AB could turn anyone characters into shit it seems. Hopefully, the fairies redeem themselves this season.
Probably much to due about nothing,
I hope this storyline with the fairies are great not to use a lot of time on them and less on everyone else. I hope the we get to see some Sookie/Eric time mid or close the end of the season . but i can’t wait to see what Claude has to bring this season .
Will reserve my opinion until I see how his character developers. If he turns out to be as awful as Alcide then I’ll complain. Like Mel, I have zero interest in the “were” storyline.
sounds bad to me… don’t like this, and eric is most definitely not going to introduce Nial to Sookie:(
this’s worry me when the paragraph says Eric isn’t involve in the faery storyline, but Giles mentioned Steve’s name. Isn’t me or Gay Al’s planing to make Bills’ the 1 who send Claude comes after to get Sookie out of faerieland??? WTF????!!!!! Billy was too busy to doing his sh*t!!! Wheres’ Eric at the time????!!!! :O There’s MUST an explaination why he brought Sookie’s house!!!!!
That had nothing to do with Bill, neither one of them could have known where she was.
