Dead Ever After: A Prologue

dead-ever-after-by-charlaine-harris-cover-3_4_r560 Well, Sookie Stackhouse fans, we finally have an excerpt that would be from the audiobook excerpt we heard a few weeks ago but with a little more detail!! I know I am not the only one who has been starving for news of the final book!!

It is indeed a Prologue, which is a new one for a Sookie Stackhouse novel! Would you like a little snippet? Why……sure you would!!

The New Orleans businessman, whose gray hair put him in his fif¬ties, was accompanied by his much younger and taller bodyguard/ chauffeur on the night he met the devil in the French Quarter. The meeting was by prearrangement.

“This is really the Devil we’re going to see?” asked the bodyguard. He was tense—but then, that wasn’t too surprising.

“Not the Devil, but a devil.” The businessman was cool and col¬lected on the outside, but maybe not so much on the inside. “Since he came up to me at the Chamber of Commerce banquet, I’ve learned a lot of things I didn’t know before.” He looked around him, trying to spot the creature he’d agreed to meet. He told his bodyguard, “He convinced me that he was what he said he was. I always thought my daughter was simply deluded. I thought she imagined she had power because she wanted to have something . . . of her own. Now I’m willing to admit she has a certain talent, though nowhere near what she thinks.”

You can read the rest of the excerpt here and as usual sound off below to tell us what you thought!

UPDATE: Well, it seems Penguin giveth and they taketh away. In place of the prologue excerpt, there is now a bio on Ms.Charlaine Harris. We have no idea why this is so but we wanted to give you a heads up in case you click on the link again to view the prologue.

  1. How exciting! I can’t wait to see what happens. I can see that they’re all coming out of the woodwork to get our Miss Stackhouse.

    • I am just glad we finally got something,I was chomping at the bit for news!! LOL. My guess on who the ‘Devil’ possessed was Eric.

      • I was thinking the same thing since no one else was standing next to her…hmmm

        • Well I just remembered (with some help from a friend lol) that Sam was standing next to her as well so it could have been him too.

        • I wonder if that has anything to do with Eric leaving the way he did??

          • It might have but who knows. We will find out soon enough.

          • In my head Eric leaving was yet another Rhett Butler reference (because he was hurt and thought Sookie had chosen Sam in the same way Rhett thought Scarlett had chosen Ashley at the end) but the possession thing would make sense too. Would also mean he’s less likely to tell Sookie he don’t give damn…that has to be a good thing. ;)

      • My guess is Alcide after listening to the last chapter of Deadlocked. Eric was nowhere near Sookie when she used the cluviel dor.

        • I am not sure that the Devil entered the body at the exact time the CD was used because he said he entered the body a person standing next to Sookie, Sam and Alcide were not standing next to Sookie, just Eric. The Devil said before he could take it from her pocket, she had used it. It really is ambiguous and it might be something that we never ever know.

  2. But very interesting! I wasn’t sure I would like the perspective changing but it was very enlightening. I can’t believe Carmichael and I hope Amelia and Sookie put him in his place, but most likely it will probably be the devil judging by this excerpt. Wasn’t Mr. C supposed to be having some sort of conflict with the devil? Something about hellhounds? Did that get resolved? I’m having trouble remembering, but anyway glad to see that Mr. C is around probably to look out for Sookie. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book!

  3. After reading this, All I can say is I can’t wait to read the book!!! Only a couple of weeks left now.

  4. I think it is Alcide that is possesed because he was standing next to Sam and Sookie and Janalyn and we know he loves power enough to sell his soul for some

  5. […] With only 2 weeks to go until “Dead Ever After” is released…check out this prologue to the book here! Spoilers beware…please read at your own […]

  6. I think it was Eric that was possessed and that was why he walked away from Sookie. I predict that Sookie will realise this at some point and she and Eric will live happily ever after but the shit is going to hit the fan in Bon Temps first. It’s probably Copely that gets Sookie framed for murder. No doubt the Viking will save the day.

    • I went back and read the end of DL and I think it was Alcide more likely but we shall see. I thought Sam was close by as well but seeing as he is the one who was gravely injured to the point of death, it could not have been him the Devil ‘entered’. I also don’t think it is Cope setting Sookie up for murder but good ole Steve Newlin and the lawyer. However, Cope will have something in store for her I think.

I have seen your posts at Miss Harris’s community board where I read but rarely post. Welcome to our corner of the world. Back to Sam, I think that poor man is living without his ‘soul’

  7. This actually made me even less interested to read it, I have a feeling this book is going to be all over the place.

    • I think it is due to the fact that we are not used to a prologue for one and hearing the story in anyone else’s voice but Sookie’s.

Remember when we all thought oh multiple POV’s and how it will be interesting to hear say Eric’s voice or Jason’s, I bet that is not what will we get, just the Devil’s and his impressions of who is he talking to,

  8. I really liked this, it’s quite different and for once we see what is happening through someone else. The devil was there when she used the cluviel dor, so he was very close to obtaining it. And Mr C is in the restaurant watching the meeting between Amelia’s slimy father and the devil. This is a lovely tease for the final book (if we don’t count the coda CH is publishing later this year). Thanks for sharing, I hadn’t seen this before.

  9. NOW I know I have to read this book!!
Charlaine has wet my interest to know what’s going to happen next!

  10. This is going to hopefully be different and gripping enough that we shift focus from who will she end up with to who is trying to hurt/kill/enslave/ or just generally mess with Sookie. I hope CH put her heart and soul into this last one. It could make up for a couple of the clinkers we ran into along the way.

    • I agree with all you say there – the books are supposed to be Sookie’s story after all.

      • Damn straight they are….I love my Viking but I know whose story this is. I read somewhere that this series was all about Sookie realizing that she loves Bill and they will be together.

Other places I read all the talk about Bill and Sam and all I can think is “What about Sookie”? the heroine of the series, whom it is all about?”

    • The prologue really made it stand out to me seeing as CH has never done a prologue before. I am a very big fan of prologue, especially where background of this nature is sorely needed.

I think Steve Newlin and the lawyer will be the one framing her for murder and Cope will be trying to ‘ruin’ her in another fashion. I bet this all ties into the ‘Secrets in Bon Temps’ thing we read about in the synopsis.

  11. I think it will be Alcide who sold his soul to the devil..he was also standing next to her and she tried to push him away (twice) during that dramatic scene… I don’t think it’s Eric

    • No matter how the Devil entered the body of, I would not put any blame on them for what the Devil intended to make that body do,steal in this case. I also am not sure if one has to sell his soul for the Devil to borrow it. Since he is using the word ‘entered’ it made me think of a ghost who needed to borrow a body to touch something feel it in their hands, you know have it become corporeal? Not saying the Devil is a ghost by any means but it is something to kick around

  12. I am going to comment on my own post to say that I would not mind if Eric was the body that the ‘Devil’ entered in that brief moment at the end of DL, simply because it would tell us whether or not vampires have a soul leftover from their human years. Or at the very least, what constitutes as having a soul anyway,as far as a vampires nature goes.

I know this idea freaks some people out because the thought of Eric stealing from Sookie is appalling but keep in mind two things: 1. He could have taken it from her as soon as he learned of it’s existence, yet he did not and 2. The ‘Devil’ would have only inhabited his body for a short period of time, on the day that she used the CD.

It would not make him the bad guy in any way, shape or form.

  13. Devils…what the what now!? How did I miss this? Nothing like adding a new Supe in the dying seconds of the game Charlaine!

Hella annoying and shouldn’t really surprise me but a DEVIL! That’s a pretty major one to chuck into the mix.

Eric possessed by the devil. Hmmm. Maybe he tried to made a deal to get out of the Freya thing? I missed reading the prologue though (boo) so I’m going on comments and have no clue what the context was.

I loved Nymerias comment about it proving he has a soul to bargain with.

Just as long as it’s not used as a way to write him off. Ugh!  *bangs head off desk till May 7th*

    • Eric will not die, of that I am confident. The Devil is not really THE Devil and I not comfortable with calling it possession really, more like borrowing, such as ghost would do. As far as the soul goes, I just want to know what constitutes having a soul when it comes to a vampire. A vampire would not have to bargain with his soul as he is already immortal to begin with.

I just think the Devil entered Eric, like a ghost would do is all, no possession required, just borrowing. lol

  14. I don’t know what to say. Just got spoiler, and I still can’t believe it.

  15. I’m too stunned and sad to even make a comment at this time. I need to let this simmer for a bit.
