Alexander Skarsgard is “Tarzan” – It’s official

Warner Bros have today announced that “Tarzan” is now in pre-production. Alexander Skarsgard has been confirmed in the lead role and he will be joined in the movie by Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson and two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz.

Warner Bros. has officially started pre-production on a new live-action 3D “Tarzan” movie that will star Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson and two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, the studio announced Tuesday.

David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters, will direct the new feature from a screenplay based on the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs.  A Jerry Weintraub production, the film is being produced by Weintraub (“Behind the Candelabra,” the “Ocean’s” trilogy), together with David Barron and Alan Riche.

In making the announcement, Silverman said, “We have assembled a phenomenal international cast to tell this extraordinary story.  Warner Bros. has also enjoyed long and successful collaborations with both David Yates and Jerry Weintraub, and we look forward to seeing what they and the entire team have in store for this timeless tale.”

Kroll added, “Tarzan has been an enduring and enigmatic figure in literature and cinema for more than a century.  The adventures of a man who was torn between two worlds has entertained and intrigued people young and old, and we are excited to bring him to the screen for a new generation.”

Fellman stated, “This is a perfect entry for the summer movie season corridor, with a terrific combination of action, adventure, romance and suspense that is sure to appeal to a broad audience.”

Jerry Weintraub added, “I am so pleased to be reuniting with the team at Warner Bros. on this thrilling project.  David Yates and I are going to be using the best of today’s technology in creating this new adventure, and we can’t wait to get started.”

The release date for the movie will be July 1st 2016.

With deals now closed for its ensemble, Warner Bros. has slated its reboot of “Tarzan” to bow on July 1, 2016.

Alexander Skarsgard is set to star as the King of the Jungle and Margot Robbie is on board to play Jane. Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz are also on board to co-star.

David Yates is helming the pic. Plot details are still vague but the film will be released in 3D.

A big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels, “Tarzan” is produced by Jerry Weintraub and Alan Riche, with Mike Richardson and Yates exec producing. Numerous scribes worked on the script, including John August, Marianne Wibberley and, most recently, Adam Cozad.

Jesse Ehrman will oversee for Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. is already seeing this as a big summer with the untitled Superman-Batman movie set to open on May 6, 2016.

  1. OMG…You’ve made my day/week/month…
Wonderful news….looking foward to seeing Alexander in a loin cloth
And also in Ewardian Dress, as Lord Greystoke….
This will be his first real major film and it’s from a Major Studio, with a
Major Producer behind it….Thank you Jerry Weinstein !!!

    • Yes, Marlene! Thanks to Jerry Weintraub and everyone involved in making Tarzan happen. I’m already there! :)

  2. looking forward to the loincloth, lol, but Margot Robbie is all wrong for Jane. Jane wasn’t a model type she was more homegrown, down to earth, don’t think she will pull it off…I dont see her swinging from a tree… just saying

    • I’ve not seen Margot Robbie in anything yet, but I do know that she is in high demand at the moment, so it’s a good move commercially to have her on board. Maybe she will change her look/style for the role?

    • I agree…she’s not what I pictured either. But I also don’t see trees being the only things she might swing from…lol! She’s beautiful, blonde, single (as of now), and in her 20’s…definitely the type he tends to go for. Just sayin’… ;)

      • If the “shoe” fits… :) “Love” ya always, Alex. Consenting adults. Not hurting anybody. Private business. Just keepin’ it real…

  3. I hope it’s a box office hit, but my gut tells me it’s going to fare more like Battleship did… I hope I’m wrong because I’d love to see a sequal.

  4. My brain is short circuiting with a barrage of images my imagination is conjuring up right now :)….I can’t write a thing and am grinning stupidly (two coworkers have already asked whats up with me!)….thanks for sharing the news :)

I’ll share a more intelligent comment in some time….

  5. Great stuff…cannot wait to see AS in action!! I’ll miss him after TB is over

  6. I’ve read other sites saying that it will be focused on Tarzans’ life after he leaves the jungle and is integrated into society. So we’ll probably get him in some decent suits since that would have been the standard for men of that time. So hopefully he doesn’t end up in another dodgy wig. The poor guy has had enough of them to last a lifetime.
I wonder when they start filming it? Since it’s not going to be released until 2016 I’m guessing they’ve taken into account him filming finale season of True Blood?

  7. I am confuse right now.

Which date they start shooting? Is they push Next year or later this summer? The producers and director said they starts preproduction 2day. I heard the release date is 2016

Alex is still shooting True Blood, and I thought bit player rumor could be false. It makes me bit concern that they won’t show Eric much this season.

    • They haven’t started shooting Tarzan yet, it is only in pre-production. The release date is July 1st 2016, so they have plenty of time. It will be a big project with sets to build and jungle locations to sort out.

    • It’s standard these days that film has its production so long, especially in 3D and with big special effects … New movie Superman vs. Batman will be filming soon and it slated for release until May 2016. In earlier statements Jerry Weintarub have said that the shooting will start in May 2014 or the beginning of summer … but who knows when it will be.

  8. Wow two years! That’s a long time away. But I will be in line the day it comes out. I hope it’s a blockbuster!

  9. I don’t know if I should be excited about this. I was secretly hoping he wouldn’t get the part for I’m so afraid it will hurt his career. I mean is it going to be a cheesy summer blockbuster that will sink as fast as Battleship? Or be a great movie like Greystoke is? Fingers crossed that it will be good.

  10. Geenakmom:
This won’t hurt his career especially if it’s a drama…
With Jerry Weintraub behind it and Warner Brother’s making it there shouldn’t be
any real problem…and he’s going to be riding the crest of the TrueBlood finale
and fans will do anything to see him…I’m really looking foward to it.

  11. I, too, am very, very excited to hear this news!! Finally, Alexs’ first lead in a feature film!! I also hope it will be a better film with a huge box office, and not a dud like Battleship and also The Lone Ranger (which, in fact, I saw at the show and thought along with my friends, that it was a darn good movie). I am a little afraid of this fact and I don’t want Alex to bomb in his 1st movie, as it makes it hard to get picked up for a second leading role…….. So we will see. But this news gives me hope and has put a big ol’ smile on my face, so thanks for this news!!!!!

  12. Ladies:
Let us begin Praying for the film…and also who’s going to be in it.
cast changes can happen…All I care is that Alexander is getting
his first real studio film under his belt….

  13. It’s only a couple of hours after I posted this news that it’s actually starting to dawn on me that Alexander Skarsgard is going to be running around shirtless on a very, very big cinema screen in 3D!!!!!!! I’m not sure I care what the plot is LOL :)

    • Believe me Evie…that was the first thing that came to my mind and then my brains got scrambled :)

I am not sure I can watch this movie with my husband because he won’t be able to deal with me drooling!!! :)

      • It will be a “tough” order for all of us to “get through” this movie, but I’m sure we’re all up for the challenge. ;)

  14. Evie-thank you SO MUCH for posting this news. I’m a little out of it today so my thoughts in general may not be totally coherent, but I’ll try.

When I saw your headlline, “Alexander Skarsgard is “Tarzan” – It’s official,” I got REALLY excited! We have been waiting on official news on this project for a LONG time, and we finally got it! “Our baby” is a MOVIE STAR, AND in 3D too! Booyah! In your face! (Sorry, I am SO sorry, I couldn’t resist!). I’ll try to calm down here and “speak” clearly. This and Diary are the best things I’ve heard about Alex’s career recently. This, right now, is the most EXCITED I have been about Alex’s career in quite a while. Excited, I tell ya! I am so happy for him as a major fan of his work and he seems like such a good person. It is so easy to root for him in his career. For myself, I want to see him in as many projects as possible, and I want the projects to be worthy of his talent and time, and to be worthy of my time as an audience member. I want the stories that he helps to tell to make sense.

This is such a major production. I know I’m in the minority, but, as I’ve “said” here before, I actually liked Battleship (don’t judge, too much :) ), and not just for Alex. But I “get” that Battleship “underperformed” at the box office. But Alex only had a supporting role in that one. I know Tarzan is a lot of pressure, but I am confident that Alex can handle it. I trust him.

Jerry Weintraub-I was just watching Behind the Candelabra (again) the other day on one of the HBOs. I’ve known about Mr. Weintraub’s involvement in Tarzan for a while. Weintraub “spilled the beans” that Alex would definitely play Tarzan a while back in an interview. I haven’t seen any of the Harry Potter films, including David Yates’, but HP is a big franchise, and it’s been in the news lately that JK Rowlling said that she wishes she had put Hermione with Harry instead of Ron. I agree that Margot Robbie is buzzing right now because of Wolf of Wall Street. Maybe this is “bad” for me to admit, but I kind of didn’t care who played Jane; as long as Alex played Tarzan, I’m in no matter what. Samuel L. Jackson is a living legend in the business as far as I’m concerned, and no slouch at the box office either. Christoph Waltz, two-time Academy Award winner, not too shabby at all.

Time Warner owns Warner Bros. and HBO, among other properties. Corporate synergy. Keep it coming, suits! ;)

I’m trying to keep a level head, but it’s REALLY hard for me right now, you see. :) My only “complaint” is that we have to wait TWO AND A HALF YEARS to see Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan on the 3D big screen, baby, but I understand this project is a massive undertaking. Wonderful news, and again, thank you SO MUCH Evie for sharing this with us. We can say we “knew” Alex when. We don’t know how the project will do, of course, but Alex and everyone are GOING FOR IT, and I am SO proud of them. It’s now or never. I’m already there!

    • July 2016 is long way away, I was surprised by that, but Warner Bros putting it as opening in one of the potentially biggest box-office weekends of the year shows they have faith in Alex to carry this. It is also 2 years after the final TB episode will air, which is a bit of a risk. Will people still have their Alex/Eric fascination? They are going to have to keep his profile high for those 2 years, and do a lot of pre-publicity (which is good for his die-hard fans).

      • Evie-thank you for responding to me. :) I hope for Alex to be content in his career, and much more importantly his personal life, as I’m sure we all do. I’m still as happy for him now as I was yesterday (and happy for me as a future audience member for Tarzan!). I found out the great news through your post. Thank you again for that, too.

Two and a half years is a long wait indeed. Obviously we have been aware of this project for a long time as well. I’m excited for him and his future in this business. He is a special actor, the kind you don’t see every day.

I think overall the Tarzan reboot is a risky project, which I’m guessing might be why it took Warner Bros. so long to greenlight it. I think they “stacked the deck” with Yates, Weintraub, Jackson, Waltz, Robbie, etc. I’m sure they’ll promote the heck out of it. If it flops commercially, it won’t be because Warner Bros. didn’t try. I think this is time for Alex to take risks like Tarzan, and I’m glad that Warner Bros./Time Warner is willing to take that chance on Alex.

I agree as well that work needs to be done to keep Alex “out there” in the LONG run-up to Tarzan. I look forward to it. ;)

  15. Personally I know I would pay to watch Alex read The Telephone Book!

  16. Aside for looking forward to seeing Alexander in a big budget staring roll, I can’t seem
to get a Swedish Tarzan yell out of my head.

  17. I am so excited .. Woo-hoo loin clothed Alex . What a beautiful gift ?
